<p>Hamstring Stretching Exercise for Back Pain</p>
<p>It seems that hamstring is somewhat related to most cases of back pains. During cases of back pains, the hamstring becomes less elastic and more rigid, causing more stress and strain to the lower back muscles. Therefore it is really a good idea to go out running once in a while. Benefits you can get while doing a good 15 minute run are so countless.</p>
<p>But in cases that you cannot afford to run, doing a hamstring stretching exercise for back pain is optional. This stretching exercise for back pain is designed to apply pressure on lengthening the hamstring. This exercise should take at least 30 &#8211; 45 seconds and should be done in two sets for each day. During the regimen, avoid stretching too fast. If you cannot reach the intended spot, slowly stretch until you reach your limit. Avoid stretch bouncing as this can cause muscles tearing.</p>
<p>By the way, we call this hamstring stretching exercise for back pain, though this is simply the most common bending exercise. We call it this way so that we have the general idea on what it&#039;s supposed to do. While standing, simply bend forward, with legs relatively straight. Then try to touch your toes and hold the position for 30 &#8211; 45 seconds. There are some others who do this easy, so instead of just reaching your toes, bend over until you can completely embrace your knees.</p>
<p>Trunk Rotation Exercise for Back Pain</p>
<p>Back muscle strength and flexibility always let you avoid back pain since they are essential in maintaining the neutral spine position. That&#039;s why exercises for back pain always target these muscle groups. The trunk rotation exercise is designed to strengthen the hip muscles and promotes flexibility of the spine.</p>
<p>To start, prepare a length of pole 2 meters long (or as long or loner than your arms&#039; width). Prepare something that&#039;s smooth and round and a bit heavy. Ideally, a heavy piece of wooden pole should be used. Sling it over your shoulders and arms and the nape of your neck. Now, stand up straight and slowly swing the pole left and right in a circular motion. Do not over extend your swing as this can cause herniated disc. Do for about 3 minutes and you will start to feel the effects the trunk rotation has on your hips and back muscles.</p>
<p>Always remember that these exercises can be enjoyed by those without back pain. Every exercise is therapeutic but can always be preventive as well. So live an active lifestyle, and enjoy life without back pain.</p>

This type of back pain is very common and may affect four out of five adults in the United States. The other type of back and leg pain is chronic, lasting for more than two months.</p>
<p>Chronic back and leg pain may be a symptom of a more serious condition. It is advised that you visit the doctor if you suffer from back pain that lasts longer than the normal two weeks to two months.</p>
<p>Here are some of the more common causes of back and leg pain:</p>
<p>Lumbar Spine Stenosis</p>
<p>This is a degenerative disease of the lumbosacral spine, affecting up to 90 percent of the U.S. population, most of them belonging to the middle aged or elderly age group. The disease is a major cause of morbidity, disability and lost productivity.</p>
<p>In lumbar stenosis, the cauda equina roots, a type of nerve found inside the spine, are entrapped within the dural sac, causing excruciating and incapacitating back and leg pain. This entrapment of the cauda equina roots is a result of progressive hypertrophy of any of the osseocartilaginous and ligamentous elements, soft tissues that surround the spinal canal.</p>
<p>Additionally, the degenerative changes or trauma could rupture or heniate the intervertebral disc, which is composed of a gelatinous, centrally located nucleus pulposes and a peripherally located annulus fibrosus.</p>
<p>Lumbar stenosis mostly affects men and the middle aged to the elderly, although it could also occur in women and younger patients. Back and leg pain is the earliest complaint of this condition, which is often treated with some of the self-care methods available. This results in delay in diagnosis.</p>
<p>Sciatica</p>
<p>Sciatica is a condition affecting the sciatic nerve. Since this nerve travels from the lower back through the buttocks and into the leg, the pain often occurs in any of these affected areas. Back and leg pain as a result of sciatica can be more or less severe and is caused by a herniated lumbar disc.</p>
<p>The degeneration (herniation) of the disc causes it to compress onto one of the contributing roots of the sciatic nerve, causing sharp back and leg pains to shoot up. Often, the pain in the leg, posterior thigh, or foot can be much worse than the accompanying lower back pain. At the onset, the patient usually experiences severe pain in the buttocks which runs all the way down through the legs or foot. In some cases, there is even no accompanying back pain.</p>
<p>Treating back and leg pain resulting from any of the two disorders mentioned will involve treating the disorders themselves. Any of the usual type of treatments available for normal back pains will provide little relief, if at all.</p>

<p>About the Upper Back</p>
<p>Your upper back is sometimes referred to as the thoracic spine, middle back or mid-back. &#034;Thoracic&#034; means that it pertains to the chest. Unlike the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbar spine (lower back), your upper back is not built for much mobility. Instead, it is there mainly for support: to keep us stable as we stand upright and to protect the vital internal organs in the chest.</p>
<p>Because of this unique design of the upper back, it rarely suffers the risk of injury or degeneration. But as what has already been shown, upper back pain does occur and the symptoms can be as bad as lower back pain.</p>
<p>Treatment</p>

<p>Pulled muscles (muscle strain) is the cause of most back muscle pain episodes while doing physical work. Pulled muscles are frequently experienced by athletes. Muscle strain from overuse cause the back muscle to spasm and create significant stiffness. In most severe cases, the pain can be unbearable and will significantly limit movement. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The National Institutes of Health reports that up to 80 percent of the general population in the United States suffers or will suffer from an episode of lower back pain. That means four out of five adults are likely to have lower back pain at some point in life, making it one of the most common neurological ailments, second only to headache.</p>
<p>There are many treatments and remedies available for persons who suffer from this condition. And while there is no definitive treatment, the use of Atlanta acupuncture for lower back pain has experienced a dramatic increase over the past few decades.</p>
<p>A number of placebo-controlled studies have established and validated Atlanta acupuncture for lower back pain as a reliable method for pain relief. In fact, the Annals of Internal Medicine has published a meta-analysis on Atlanta acupuncture for lower back pain showing how among the two dozen previously published studies on back pain treatments, acupuncture is &#034;significantly more effective&#034; than sham acupuncture or no treatment.</p>
<p>ACUPUNCTURE: How it Works</p>
<p>Acupuncture is a significant component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has been used to treat a number of illnesses for hundreds of years in China and most Asian nations.</p>
<p>The treatment is based on a theory that the human body is made up of channels or meridians where the &#034;life force&#034; or qi flows through. If these meridians are blocked off because of stress or any number of causes of illness, it would compromise the health of the individual. The goal of acupuncture, therefore, is to unblock the clogged meridians and allow the qi to once more flow freely throughout the body. This is done by sticking needles unto the affected meridians to release the qi.</p>
<p>The Science Behind</p>
<p>In a recent study published in the Clinical Journal of Pain, Dr. Christer Carlsson and his colleague Dr. Bengt Sjlund of the Lund University Hospital in Sweden were able to prove the safety of using Atlanta acupuncture for lower back pain.</p>
<p>Recruiting 50 patients (comprised of 33 women and 17 men) all of whom have been suffering chronic low back pain for a minimum of six months, the scientists randomly assigned one group out of three to undergo sessions of Atlanta acupuncture for lower back pain. The other two groups underwent electroacupuncture and placebo, respectively.</p>
<p>After four sessions plus a follow up treatment two months later, &#034;significant&#034; changes were observed in the group that underwent Atlanta acupuncture for lower back pain. Based on these results, the scientists concluded that &#034;there is now reasonable evidence that acupuncture has a clinically relevant pain-relieving effect on certain forms of chronic pain.&#034;</p>
<p>Several more studies were conducted investigating the effects of Atlanta acupuncture for lower back pain. While the question of efficacy remains widely disputed, a good number of the European medical community are adopting Atlanta acupuncture for lower back pain as a valid treatment method.</p>

<p>Rest Your Back</p>
<p>Most healthcare professionals and therapists suggest bed rest as the first step in providing low back pain relief. But take note that this method should only be done for two days and no longer. The reason is that prolonged inactivity due to extended bed rest may cause secondary complications, such as depression, muscular atrophy, weakness, and other conditions, to arise.</p>
<p>To achieve low back pain relief, the best position is to lie on your back on the floor. Place pillows under your knees so that your hips and knees are slightly bent. Another way of resting your back for low back pain relief is to prop your feet on a chair. Place the pillows on the seat of the chair and place the back of your legs over it with your back flat on the floor.</p>
<p>Both these positions will help take weight and pressure off your back, thus providing low back pain relief.</p>
<p>Heating Pads and Ice Packs</p>
<p>Following trauma, the person should apply an ice pack or compress over the injured area. Do this for up to 20 minutes several times every day. If you still do not achieve low back pain relief after two to three days of cold treatment, use a heat pack. This will help relax the muscles and increase blood flow, speeding up recovery.</p>
<p>Medications</p>
<p>A variety of nonprescription drugs that provide low back pain relief are available in most drug stores. These drugs include analgesics or pain killers, anti-inflammatory and swelling, such as aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), naproxen (Aleve), ketoprofen (Orudis), and ibuprofen (Motrin).</p>
<p>Sit Properly</p>
<p>One of the many causes of low back pain is improper posture. In order to provide low back pain relief, sit properly in chairs with straight backs or have a low back support. To take the weight off your back, keep your knees a little higher than your hips by resting your feet on a low stool for instance or adjusting the seat. And when you turn, move your whole body instead of twisting your waist.</p>
<p>Low back pain relief may also be achieved even while driving. Sit straight and move the car seat forward. This will provide low back pain relief by removing the necessity of leaning forward in order to reach the controls. A rolled up towel or a pillow placed behind your lower back may also provide low back pain relief.</p>

<p>There are actually three back pain muscles that are called as extensors, flexors and obliques.</p>
<p>* Extensors</p>
<p>These are attached to the posterior or back of the spine that enable standing and lifting of objects. These consist of large paired muscles in the lower back that assist in supporting up the spine and gluteal muscles.</p>
<p>* Flexors</p>
<p>These are glued to the anterior or front of the spine that comprises of the abdominal muscles. It permits bending forward and arching the lower back.</p>
<p>* Oblique</p>
<p>These are closely in the sides of the spine that help in rotation and maintain posture correctly.</p>
<p>There are certain exercises to remedy back muscle pains that it may better serves as strength and tone. Unlike the abdominal muscles which are left usually inactive and unconditioned, the gluteals in the thighs experience more work because it aid human beings in walking, climbing or running. However, those mentioned muscles weakened with age so there is a need for calisthenics for it to be stretched over and over.</p>
<p>Physical therapy and workout regimens are certain effective medications to back pain muscles. They concentrate on powering the extensor, flexor and oblique muscles. <p>Staying active is one of the best methods of preventing lower back pain. Performing lower back pain exercises on a regular basis can minimize problems with your back. Often, the reason why you experience back pains is because of muscle weakness due to inactivity or disuse. The muscles, joints, and ligaments around your spine lose their natural flexibility as a result, leading to painful episodes when you suddenly put strain on these same muscles.</p>
<p>However, if you regularly observe lower back pain exercises, then you give your back, stomach, hips and thighs muscle an opportunity to strengthen and become more flexible.</p>
<p>There are, of course, other ways of keeping your body well-conditioned and staying active. Some people do recreational activities, such as running, walking, bike riding, and swimming, to keep themselves in good physical conditions. But in addition to these conditioning activities, there are also specific lower back pain exercises that are directed toward the development of your back, stomach, hip and thigh muscles.</p>
<p>Reminder: Before you begin any lower back pain exercise program, discuss the mechanics of the routines involved with your doctor. Additionally, do a few warm-up or stretching exercises before tackling any lower back pain exercise program. Warm-ups will help you condition your body and prevent the risk of injury that may arise while exercising.</p>
<p>Wall Slides</p>
<p>The object of this lower back pain exercise is to increase strength in your back, hip and leg muscles. First, stand with your back against the wall. Position your feet slightly apart so that they are shoulder-width from each other. Then, slide down to a half crouch. While in this position, make sure your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle. Count to five before sliding back up the wall. Repeat this movement five more times before moving on to the next exercise.</p>
<p>Leg Raise</p>
<p>This lower back pain exercise program will strengthen back and hip muscles. You need a mat or blanket for this.</p>
<p>First, assume the reclining position with your stomach on the mat. Place your hands at the sides. Now, tighten the muscles of your right leg first and raise it from the floor. Hold that leg up for about ten seconds before returning it to the floor. Do the same with your left leg. Repeat the whole exercise five times for each leg.</p>

So even though your back is a well-designed structure of bone, muscles, nerves, and other soft tissues, it is vulnerable to injury and back pain, either of which can be disabling.</p>
<p>Back pain is a common condition, occurring in four out of five adults. While back pain is most likely to occur at one time in your life, there are steps you can take to prevent it from happening to you or keep the pain from becoming worse.</p>
<p>Causes</p>
<p>Most back pain occurs in the lower back, where most of your body weight is supported. It is often a result of strained back muscles and ligaments due to any of the following activities:</p>
<p>* Improper posture<br />
* Heavy lifting<br />
* Sudden awkward movement<br />
* Muscle spasm<br />
* Stress</p>
<p>In some cases, however, back pain can be traced back to specific conditions, such as:</p>
<p>* Herniated Disk &#8211; When the disk material presses on a nerve.<br />
* Sciatica &#8211; When a herniated disk presses on the sciatic nerve. The condition causes sharp, shooting pain through the buttocks and the back of the leg.<br />
* Spinal Stenosis &#8211; When the space around the spinal cord and nerve roots becomes narrow. Caused by arthritis and bone overgrowth. Pain results when a nerve gets pinched in the narrow space.<br />
* Spondylosis &#8211; A type of arthritis affecting the spine due to degenerative changes brought on by aging.<br />
* Spondylolisthesis &#8211; When one vertebra in the spinal column slips forward over another.</p>
<p>Since back pain in any of these instances is premised on a definable cause, the treatment procedure is also easily identified. Back pain may also be caused by other specific conditions, not mentioned here because they occur only rarely.</p>
<p>Medical Advice</p>
<p>Home treatment and self-care are often the best method to take care of back pain. However, there are rare instances where back pain could signal a more serious medical problem, in which case, medical advice is needed.</p>
<p>Take heed of the following symptoms of back pain:</p>
<p>* Constant or intense back pain, especially when lying down at night<br />
* Back pain spreads down one or both legs<br />
* Weakness, numbness, or tingling in one or both legs<br />
* New bowel or bladder problems<br />
* Abdominal pain or pulsation, fever<br />
* Follows a fall, blow to your back or other injury<br />
* Accompanied by unexplained weight loss</p>
<p>If you experience any of the above, then be sure to see your doctor immediately. Additionally, if you are older than 50, seek doctor&#039;s advice about your back pain even when you do not experience any of the abovementioned symptoms. <p>* Alexander Technique<br />
Teaching people to improve their posture and eliminate bad habits, the Alexander technique stresses the importance of choosing a healthy lifestyle. It was created by an Australian actor, Frederick Matthias Alexander. He learned how to correct croakiness in his voice by not slouching and just standing tall.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Suffering from lower back pain? You are not alone. At some point in life almost everyone suffers from back pain. The condition is troublesome not only because it causes pain (severe pain in extreme cases) but also because it interferes with work, daily activities and routine, or recreation.</p>
<p>Each year, Americans spend an average of $50 billion on treatment or research for prevention of lower back pain. The condition has been cited as one of the most common causes of job-related disability, leading the person to miss work. Back pain is, in fact, the second most common neurological ailment in the United States, second only to headache.</p>
<p>The good news is that most lower back pain lasts only for a few days. However, there are instances where the condition could last longer.</p>
<p>Acute Lower Back Pain</p>
<p>Sometimes referred to as short-term lower back pain, acute lower back pain extends any time from a few days to a few weeks. The condition is considered as mechanical in nature as it is often the result of trauma to the lower back.</p>
<p>Short-term back pain may also be caused by disorders that affect the spine, such as arthritis, sports injury, working around the house or in the garden, or a sudden jolt that adds stress to the spinal bones and tissues. One example of the latter is when you receive trauma to your lower back due to a car accident.</p>
<p>The condition has symptoms that range from muscle aches to shooting or stabbing pain. Short-term lower back pain may also limit your flexibility and/or range of motion. Sometimes, it may even lead to inability to stand straight.</p>
<p>If left untreated, some acute lower back pain may lead to more serious conditions.</p>
<p>Chronic Lower Back Pain</p>
<p>Lower back pain is classified by duration. Therefore, if the pain lasts only for a few days to a few weeks, it is short-term or acute lower back pain. However, if the pain persists for more than three months, then the condition is already chronic.</p>
<p>Chronic lower back pain is progressive. This means that the symptoms can only get worse over time. There are a number of possible causes but they are difficult to determine with each case. That is why people who suffer back pain that lasts for far longer than what is considered &#034;normal&#034; are advised to consult the doctor as soon as possible.</p>
<p>Self-Treatment</p>
<p>Since pain to the lower back is fairly common, there are quite a few home remedies used to treat it. Most of the time the treatment involves using analgesics or taking drugs that reduce inflammation, restore proper function and strength, and prevent recurrence of the injury. Cold and hot compresses are also frequently used to treat lower back pain although the same has not been scientifically proven to treat back pain.</p>
<p>After 72 hours of self-care and there is still no improvement, patients are advised to consult the doctor.</p>

<p>Patients always have an option to perform other techniques including lying prone. This is executed by putting their arms on top of their stomachs for about ten to fifteen minutes. An alternative of such is the use of a pillow in order to support the back. There are also instances that press ups and standing extensions are advised to be done.</p>
<p>Physical therapists can teach a lot of exercises for back pain. They will introduce you to this method and other else but the bottomline is that you will apply them. Consistency may be a burden for you but the rewards are worth it. Taking on the consultation from your care specialist is critical in healing those problems.</p>
<p>Here is an example of one of the many natural exercises for back pain. The difference with this is that it is oriental in character. It is a traditional Chinese medicine that has a 2, 500 year old history attached to its name. It offers a lot that also covers stretching, massage, acapuncture, liniments, herbs and plasters.</p>
<p>Some of those who have tried have sought the assistance of a trained traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to administer it to them. However, there are others who have learned it on their own. Further discussed below are exercises for back pain that you can just operate by yourself.</p>
<p>1. On a firm bed or at the floor, lie on your back. Slowly raise your knees up until they are above abdomen. When grabbing the inside of your shins, spread your knees a little. When you exhale, let your knees effortlessly fall further out to the side with gravity. Close your eyes as you focus your mind on your lower back. Feel the stretch of your inner thighs and the relaxation of your lower back. For several minutes, hold on to that position as you inhale and exhale deeply.</p>
<p>2. With the knees bent, slide up your feet until they are near your backside. Inhale and exhale as you flatten your lower back by gently pressing it into where you are lying down. Hold on to it for how many seconds then go back to its curled position. Repeat for about three to four times.</p>
<p>3. In a table, lean across and grab the far edge with both hands. With your torso on the table, your legs should be hanging from the edge. Inhale and exhale as you feel the gravity naturally pulling your legs down towards the floor. Feel it being stretched as you hold on to it for several minutes together with a slow breathing. Close your eyes and imagine the pain releasing with each exhalation.</p>

<p>However, while back pain is indeed a common condition that happens to four out of five adults, what most people don&#039;t know about it is that it could be a symptom of a far more serious disorder. In fact, most chronic forms of back pain (lasting for more than two months) are actually symptoms of serious diseases, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, scoliosis, cervical spndylosis, spinal cancer, bone cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn&#039;s disease, mittelschmerz, cervix cancer, tuberculosis, meningitis, among others.</p>
<p>Another possible hidden cause of back pain is gall bladder disease.</p>
<p>What is gall bladder disease?</p>
<p>Gall bladder disease is a disorder of the gall bladder, a small pear-shaped organ found on the underside of the liver. The liver is responsible for making bile but the gall bladder is where bile is stored, ready to be released whenever it is needed to help with the digestion of fat.</p>
<p>Gall bladder disease occurs when the bile contains too much cholesterol. The excess cholesterol binds with bile salts and calcium to form crystals or hard stones, known as gall stones. The presence of these gall stones is the cause of some of the more painful symptoms of gall bladder disease, such as gall bladder back pain.</p>
<p>What is gall bladder back pain?</p>
<p>Gall bladder back pain is a condition that occurs when the gall bladder is inflamed due to improper functioning. It is a sure sign of underlying problems within your gall bladder. Gall bladder back pain is one of the common symptoms of gall bladder disease, a disorder that mainly affects women (although it could affect men, as well), and causing symptoms that vary widely from discomfort to severe pain.</p>
<p>How do you know if you have it?</p>
<p>Typically, when a person experiences gall bladder back pain, it starts in the mid back before radiating around to the front. Sometimes, gall bladder back pain can be so severe that the person affected may find it hard to walk or even stand. In some instances, gall bladder back pain may even cause difficulty in breathing because of the excruciating pain.</p>
<p>Treatment</p>
<p>Gall bladder back pain is not susceptible to normal back pain treatments. Because the cause is not some injury or trauma or stress to the muscles or the spinal column, the treatment options available for normal back pains will provide only little, temporary relief &#8211; if at all.</p>
<p>Treating gall bladder back pain will have to be done in conjunction with identifying the real cause &#8211; that is, identifying what disorder to the gall bladder the person is unknowingly suffering from. Only by treating the underlying cause will it be possible to treat gall bladder back pain and prevent the person from suffering further.</p>
