The term cerebral palsy refers to a group of disorders in the movement of body that occurs during birth or just after few months of birth. It happens either due to less supply of oxygen or an accident in which the brain of the infant is affected and many other reasons. Cerebral palsy cases are also found in adults. Again it could be due to less supply of oxygen, accident, vascular problems that normally occur as the person grows old or a probably because of a paralysis attack.

Relation between aging and CP

There actually exists a relation in cerebral palsy and aging. As mentioned above, the vascular problems or problems related to heart are one of the common aspects that have a connection with both aging as well as Cerebral palsy. As the age of a person goes on increasing, the functionality of the heart goes on decreasing due to which there could be a lack of blood supply to the brain as the blood carries oxygen within it. This could result into Cerebral palsy to an aged person. The most common feature observed in cerebral palsy and aging is weakening of all the body muscles and the result of an abnormal posture of people. The hearing of the people becomes weak and so does the speech of these people is affected.

Adults with cerebral palsy and those who deliver services to these people have expressed a concern about the individuals affected with cerebral palsy having negative effect of aging process. They do fell like they are disabled persons. They experience a rapid decline in the functioning of the body and decrease in the energy levels. Disabilities having longer duration could produce excessive wear and tear of muscles and other body systems. Arthritis is a common problem with aged people affected by cerebral palsy. Statistics show that 40% of people get affected by arthritis due to cerebral palsy. As people with cerebral palsy get older, they tend o do things very slowly such as walking, talking, dressing or eating. They might even require a personal assistant to do their work.

Unfortunately there is not much available information available to help these people. The combination of aging and disability is an unexplored area. Each person is affected differently depending on the severity of the disorder. Efforts are being made on how to deal with and help these people.

Cerebral Palsy or CP as it is commonly called is an umbrella like term use to describe a group of chronic disorders impairing movement control that appears in first few years of life and generally does not worsen over the time. The disorders are caused by a faulty development or damage to motor areas to the brain that disrupts the brain's ability to control the movement or posture. It usually occurs during fetal development or during infancy.

Statistics of Cerebral Palsy: -

Statistics is one of the most vital factors that are considered in the studying of the deadly disorder. Studies reveal that there are about 4 to 5 cases per 10000 births. The people affected with CP have common disabilities of communication, speech, hearing, body movements and many more. Studies also reveal that early signs of Cerebral Palsy appear before three to four years of age. Infants with these disorders are usually slow to reach the development milestones such as sitting, crawling, smiling and many more. These statistics could prove an important input for research and studies of Cerebra palsy.

According to the recent survey, 3000 babies are born with the disorder each year in United States, and about 1,500 pre-schoolers are diagnosed with CP during the first three years of life. In 70% cases, cerebral palsy if found with some other disorder, the most common being mental retardation. Despite the medical advances, the incidence of CP has actually increased over the time. More detailed studies have found that prevalence of CP has remained very stable for many years. The incidence increases with pre mature or low weight babies regardless the quality of care taken to handle them. Twins are also four times more likely to develop Cerebral Palsy than single births.

Despite medical advances, in some cases the incidence of CP has actually increased over time. This may be attributed to medical advances in areas related to premature babies or the increased usage of artificial fertilization techniques. These statistics could help the research and other institutions in developing some cure or medicine that would help in eliminating the disorder or at least minimizing it.

Cerebral palsy is a common condition in children. It is a permanent physical condition and affects movements. Cerebral palsy basically refers to a group of disorders that impair control of movement. It appears in the first few years of life, but does not worsen over a period of time. This occurs due to improper development of or damage to the motor areas in the brain. Children suffering from cerebral palsy may not be able to talk, eat, walk and perform tasks like normal kids. Cerebral palsy leads to loss of sensation, communication problems and frequent seizures.

What is it?

Cerebral palsy is a common condition in children. It is a permanent physical condition and affects movements. Cerebral palsy basically refers to a group of disorders that impair control of movement. It appears in the first few years of life, but does not worsen over a period of time. This occurs due to improper development of or damage to the motor areas in the brain. Children suffering from cerebral palsy may not be able to talk, eat, walk and perform tasks like normal kids. Cerebral palsy leads to loss of sensation, communication problems and frequent seizures.

Cause of Cerebral Palsy

Though the exact cause is not known, most cases of cerebral palsy have been attributed to brain damage, during or after birth. Some major causes are asphyxia, hypoxia of the brain, birth traumas, premature birth, infections in the mother during or before birth and hematomas. After birth, cerebral palsy is caused due to some toxins, physical brain injury, encephalitis and meningitis. Premature kids stand the highest risk of getting cerebral palsy. Many children with cerebral palsy have a congenital malformation in the brain.

Diagnosis

Normal development milestones such as walking, talking, and sitting are basic motor functions. Delay in these developmental skills can indicate cerebral palsy. Abnormal muscle tone, abnormal movements and reflexes also indicate cerebral palsy. Diagnosis of cerebral palsy involves a waiting period for specific development of certain motor problems. Diagnosis of cerebral palsy cannot be done by an X-ray or blood test. Children with normal brain scans may also have cerebral palsy. Thus, MRI's and CT scans are not sure diagnostic tests for cerebral palsy.

Treatment

There is no specific cure for cerebral palsy. Various forms of therapy have been found to be helpful in effective functioning of an affected child. Individual treatment programs vary as no two children have the same type of cerebral palsy. A therapeutic exercise program will be a part of the treatment. Drugs may be prescribed to prevent seizures in children. Physical therapy helps improve the development of large muscles in the legs, arms and abdomen. This therapy enables children learn better ways to move and balance. Speech and Language therapy helps develop better control of jaw and mouth muscles. Children receiving proper therapy have fewer movement limitations and can lead an almost normal life.

Diplegic cerebral palsy or diplegia is a type of cerebral palsy that primarily affects the legs. Most children suffering from cerebral palsy usually have some problem with their arms, but in case of children suffering from diplegia, the problems associated with the arms are less involved and less severe. Patients with diplegic cerebral palsy can also have vision and eye involvement. Diplegia is caused by damage to the frontal lobe of the brain.

Problems associated with Diplegia:

Most children having diplegia have the problem of spasticity and also find it difficult to balance and coordinate. Also, delayed muscle growth and spasticity cause their leg muscles to be short thereby decreasing their ability to fully use their legs and feet as they grow up. Their joints also become stiff. More problems are presented by the feet and the ankles as compared to the knees due to the Achilles tendon becoming short and tight and leading to toe walking. There is also risk of the hips becoming dislocated. Due to this reason, the hips should be closely monitored to keep track of any deformities.

Degree of severity of disability:

There are three different classifications for the degree of severity of disability of children with diplegic cerebral palsy: mild, moderate and severe. A patient with mild diplegic cerebral palsy can walk without using aids. He also has a normal tolerance for walking and can keep up with non-disabled children of the similar age in activities that involve walking. A patient with moderate diplegic cerebral palsy has the ability to walk for most daily activities but at times may need to use an aid such as crutches or a walker. As far as lengthy walking is concerned such as walking in a zoo, an amusement park or a shopping mall, the patient with moderate involvement would need the use of a wheelchair. A patient with severe diplegic cerebral palsy would need an aid for even walking small distances and will prefer walking only on level ground in open areas. Such a patient will need a wheelchair for getting around in public.

Diplegic cerebral palsy, like other types of cerebral palsy is hard to detect at an early stage. Some warning signs of diplegia include stiff legs that are hard to move. There may be floppiness of the arms and legs but they may turn stiff later. No tests or scans can detect cerebral palsy, rather the diagnosis is based on motor movement.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy refers to a group of neurological disorders that affect the normal functioning of the brain. It results from brain damage and generally affects an infant in the mother's womb, during or after childbirth. It is a non-progressive condition that disrupts the communication between the brain and the muscles. Cerebral Palsy is not diagnosed until the age of two or three in a child.

Causes and Symptoms

The major cause of cerebral palsy is extensive brain damage. This could be due to hypoxia, asphyxia or hormonal disorders such as menopause, diabetes and hypothyroidism. The other main risk factors include premature births, poor maternal nutrition and interventricular hemorrhage.
The symptoms of cerebral palsy are limited motor skills, learning disabilities, inability to walk and balance well, seizures, and involuntary movements. Children with cerebral palsy take more time to reach developmental milestones, such as rolling over, walking, sitting and talking. They also experience difficulty in performing simple tasks.

Diagnosis and treatment

Cerebral palsy is chiefly diagnosed by evaluating a child's movements and muscle tones. A careful medical history is required to screen out other similar disorders. The doctors can diagnose cerebral palsy in view of the typical symptoms of the disorder. CT (Computer Tomography) scans and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans help identify the underdeveloped areas in the brain.

Though cerebral palsy is a permanent physical condition, it is possible to lead a normal life with it. There are various kinds of therapies and treatments available that enable children to overcome this disorder. As no two children are affected by the same kind of cerebral palsy, the individual lines of treatment also vary widely. Therapy programs require a lot of time commitment, so it is advisable that the parents and caretakers also involve themselves actively. Physical therapy helps develop the large muscles in the body. It includes regular exercises and fun activities. Speech and language therapy helps in building up better control of the jaw and mouth muscles. Occupational therapy enables patients to learn daily skills. Drugs such as Diazepam, Baclofen and Dantrolene reduce spasticity and seizures. These therapies enable the child achieve his optimum level of functioning. It is of foremost importance to instill self-respect and confidence in the child.

Just in the way the degree of cerebral palsy and learning disabilities vary in an individual, the techniques for teaching children with cerebral palsy vary as well. By consulting with several types of specialists you can decide what types of teaching techniques are necessary for teaching children with cerebral palsy. Social workers, occupational and physical therapists, educators, psychologists, physicians and speech-language pathologists can help patients by providing information and knowledge of various programs and teaching children with cerebral palsy.

Physical Therapists

Physical therapists help in teaching children with cerebral palsy to learn better ways to move and balance and they accomplish this by teaching children with cerebral palsy how to walk, use their wheelchair, stand by themselves or go up and down stairs safely. Physical therapists also encourage on fun skills like running, kicking and throwing a ball or even riding a bike when teaching children with cerebral palsy.

Speech Therapists

Teaching patients communication skills is the primary focus of speech and language therapy. Communication skills include talking, using sign language or using a communication aid. Speech therapists are good for teaching patients that are able to talk and speak more clearly because they help patients build their language skills by learning new words, learning to speak in sentences and improving their listening skills. Teaching patients sign language is also a qualification of a speech therapist and they also teach children how to use a communication aid such as a book or poster with pictures showing things the child might want, or an alphabet board they can use to spell out their message.

Occupational Therapists

Occupational therapists work by teaching patients better ways to use their arms, hands, and upper body. They also teach patients convenient ways to write, draw, cut with scissors, brush their teeth, dress and feed themselves or control their wheel chair. They patients find the right special equipment to make everyday jobs easier.

By working with these specialists one can help ease the difficulties of teaching children with cerebral palsy. The techniques for teaching them can also be carried over into the home to expand the patient's learning environment. A supportive family working with the child and helping teach him can produce great results.

Cerebral palsy is the term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movements and muscle co-ordination. It is caused by damage to one or more specific areas to the motor part of the brain, usually occurring during birth or after the birth of the child. The term cerebral refers to the two hemispheres of the brain and palsy refers to a disorder of movement or posture. It is characterized by the to fully control the motor functions of the brain due to the lack of supply of oxygen or an accident causing injury to the brain during the fetal development. It is also characterized by the loss of movements or loss of other nerve functions.

Effects of CP on the Brain

Cerebral palsy is normally caused due to the injury to the brain or lack of blood supply or oxygen to the brain. The other reasons behind the cerebral palsy are infections to the brain by certain virus, premature births, infections during pregnancy, blood diseases, severe jaundice and many such reasons which are yet to be discussed or found. In short, the disorder is caused due to damage or injury to the brain.

There are many effects observed and studied in a cerebral palsy affected child or adult. People with damage to their cerebellum have a problem with balance, especially while walking. These people have common disorders with visual or auditory processing of objects. Persons with this disorder suffer from involuntary body movements. This is due to the damage caused to the extra pyramidal motor system and the basal ganglia. With respect to these disorders, the other signs and symptoms such as weakening of muscles and bones, abnormal posture, abnormal speech, abnormal behavior, learning abilities, communication disorders, reflexes and various other side effects are also observed. The signal is not carried from the brain to the muscles entirely or partly. Mental retardation is also one of the major disorders observed in the CP affected person.

Cure

There is no cure to CP, but various forms of therapy can help the person with disorder to function more effectively. Many treatments focus on helping the person to develop as many motor skills as possible. Thus a proper treatment to these people could see these people lead a productive life.

Cerebral palsy can be termed as a static encephalopathy caused by an insult to the brain of the newborn baby during the prenatal, perinatal, or postnatal period. Cerebral palsy is a group of chronic disorders impairing control of movement. Cerebral palsy is generally caused by the faulty development or damage to motor areas in the brain that disrupts the brain's ability to control movement and posture. The symptoms of the cerebral palsy vary in terms of severity. The main symptoms of the cerebral palsy include difficulty with normal motor tasks such as writing or using scissors, difficulty in walking and imbalanced pasture. Cerebral palsy normally do not get worsen over the time. Cerebral palsy can lead to global dysfunction but always includes motor problems.

Pathophysiology:

There are mainly four types of cerebral palsy based on the movement dysfunction. First is Spastic cerebral palsy in which the sudden, involuntary movements are seen in the patient. These movements are stiff and difficult. The second is Athetoid characterized with uncontrolled, slow, writhing movements. The third type is Ataxic cerebral palsy in which irregular muscle coordination and lack of balance can be noticed. The fourth and final type is mixed cerebral palsy, which is a combination of two or more types. The cerebral insults have a wide range and include vascular, hypoxic-ischemic, metabolic, infectious, traumatic, and genetic causes. There may be some other causes also.

The spasticity results because of too much facilitatory input from the spinal reflex arc. This spinal reflex arc is generated by a stretch put on the muscle spindle. The spindle sends information to the spinal cord that generally is controlled by the descending tracts. If these tracts are injured, then an uncontrolled facilitation occurs that causes the muscle to contract. The muscle takes up the length on the spindle. The basal ganglia are a contributor to the extra pyramidal system of the muscles. It is an important center for movements related to posture, automatic movements and skilled volitional movements. Injuries or insults in this area often results in the difficulty in stopping motion, rigidity, tremor or chorea. These symptoms are medically known as akinesia. Inability to control the range of motion in an activity also results due to the insult to cerebellum.

But a good guidance from the experts and help from the various institutions could help the cerebral palsy affected people live a better and happy life.

About Cerebral Palsy Associations: -

There are various Cerebral Palsy Associations in action all over the world. The main aim of these people is the same; "Helping the CP affected people". These institutions include the members such as physicians, social workers, speech related teachers, psychiatrists and many more who willingly work to help for the development of these patients. There are also the agencies which sponsor the research which is directly relevant to the prevention of cerebral palsy. This helps in improving the quality of the life of the people affected with the deadly disorder. In its studies, these institutions also focus on the effects of maternal infection on the developing brain of the child. Improvement on the movements, speech, postures, communications and many more causes are also being studied and brought into action.

These institutions not only help the people living with their families, but also the ones that are rejected by the society. They are provided with good food, shelter and effective and efficient aids for their well being. The clinical and other facilities are either given free or at a low cost to these people. These institutions also help to spread a social awareness among common people. General school trips to the homes of these people are conducted and educational programs about cerebral palsy are carried out. This helps in spreading the message for accepting these people as they are not someone to be neglected. These institutions are in need of funds as well as of the people who are ready to work willingly for a good cause. The workers are given a proper training so that the classes could be carried out effectively.

These institutions are mostly government run. But helping these people and the institutions is the responsibility of the entire society.

The incident in developed countries is approximately 2.25 per 5thousand births. Cerebral palsy is a non progressive disorder. While severity varies widely, cerebral palsy ranks among the most costly congenital conditions to manage.

History of cerebral palsy: -

Cerebral palsy, then known as cerebral paralysis, was first identified by British surgeon William Little in 1860. Research conducted during the 1980's by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) suggested that only a small number of cases of Cerebral Palsy are caused by lack of oxygen during birth. A scientist called Thomas Galton believed that there was consistency between physical disability and aptitude.

Most scholars acknowledge that ataxic, Athetoid, spastic, and mixed are the relevant forms of cerebral palsy; however, various conditions and subtypes may exist. Also, a common misnomer is that CP caused mental retardation when in fact; only individuals whose brain damage is associated with the hippocampus actually had these difficulties. While learning difficulties and CP may occur, it is common for individuals with CP to have normal lives when their lives are managed coherently and effectively. This means that if the individual can focus on scholastic achievement or improving social skills, rather than when they will get their next treatment, that individual is going to fare better than when the necessary assistive technology is not available.

More on cerebral palsy: -

Cerebral palsy is an "umbrella term" in that it refers to a group of different conditions. It has been suggested that no two people with CP are alike even if they have the same diagnosis. Cerebral palsy is divided into four major classifications to describe the different movement impairments. These classifications reflect the area of brain damaged. The four classifications are: (1) Spastic (2) Athetoid (3) Ataxic and (4) Mixed. Spastic cerebral palsy is further classified by topography, dependent on the region of the body affected. These typography classifications include: (1) hemiplegia in which one side is being more affected than the other (2) diplopia in which the lower body is being more affected than the upper body and (3) quadriplegia in which all four limbs are affected equally.

Cerebral palsy cannot transfer from one body to another. So people should look after these patients with affection and not hatred or sarcasm.

Surgery for cerebral palsy is used to treat tight muscles and spasticity related to cerebral palsy. An incision is made in the skin over the affected muscle and parts of the muscle are then cut to release the tightness.

After-effects of surgery:

After surgerey, joints that were previously stiff can move more easily. However, the affected muscle might be weak. Some patients may need to wear a cast or brace to support an area where movements are not under control. In addition to that some patients may need to have additional orthopedic surgeries.

Why opt for surgery?

The type of surgery done to treat problems from cerebral palsy depends on which muscle groups are affected. A basic goal is to loosen the muscles that make the hips turn toward the body or partially release the hip adductor muscles. This surgery increases hip movement thereby allowing a child to sit and walk more easily. Surgery also aims to loosen muscles on the back of the thigh or partially release hamstring. These muscles control the tension in the thigh and around the knee thereby allowing a child to sit and walk with a normal posture. Surgery can also help to loosen the tendon at the back of the ankle or lenghten achilles tendon or heel cord. This surgery can help a child walk with flatter feet.

Disadvantages of surgery:

Corrections made during surgery for cerebral palsy may be temporary. As the patient grows, the same muscles or other muscles may become tight and cause contractures and therefore additional surgery may be needed. But surgery of any kind carries with it the risk of bleeding, infection or need for repeated surgery. Surgery carries the additional risk that it may resolve some problems only to create more problems as the patient grows and develops.

Surgery is not always essential but it is sometimes recommended so as to improve muscle development, to correct contractures and reduce spasticity in the legs. Before selecting any surgical procedure one should make sure the doctor thoroughly discusses the risks involved, the long-term effects and the postoperative follow-up. It is also advisable to get a second opinion and speak with other parents whose children have had the same surgical procedure.

Cerebral palsy is a group of chronic disorders impairing control of movement. These disorders generally appear in the first few years of life and usually do not worsen overtime.

Causes of Cerebral Palsy:

Cerebral palsy is caused by injuries, infections or other trauma to the brain when an infant is in uterus or during the time of birth. Some of the known causes of cerebral palsy include infections during pregnancy, insufficient oxygen reaching the fetus, premature birth and asphyxia during labor and delivery, blood diseases, severe jaundice and other birth defects.

Symptoms – How to diagnose Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy can be diagnosed mainly by evaluating how a baby or a young child moves. The doctor will check the child's reflexes and examine if the baby has developed a preference for using his right or left hand. While most babies do not develop a preference for either right-handed or left-handed until at least 12 months of age, some babies with cerebral palsy do so before six months of age. Another sign of cerebral palsy is the persistence of certain reflexes, called primitive reflexes that are normal in younger infants, but generally disappear by 6 to 12 months of age. A careful medical history should be taken to rule out any other disorders that could be causing the symptoms. Brain imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT scan) or ultrasound can help identify the cause of cerebral palsy. Ultrasound is often recommended in babies who are considered at risk of cerebral palsy to help diagnose brain abnormalities that are frequently associated with cerebral palsy thereby allowing therapy to begin early.

Signs and Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy:

The various signs and symptoms of cerebral palsy include poor head control, delays in motor development, lying in awkward positions, delay in crawling and walking as well as favoring of one hand over the other and abnormal crawling. The other symptoms of cerebral palsy are floppy or stiff movements due to overdeveloped or underdeveloped muscles, loss of coordination and balance, involuntary slow, writhing movements, spastic paralysis resulting in abnormal stiffness and contraction of muscles and slow overall development. The other problems due to cerebral palsy are difficulty with speech, hearing, or vision, difficulty with sensation, breathing difficulties, seizures, behavioral and/ or attention deficit disorders and limited range of motion.

The Backbone–financial help:

According to the 1999 Amendments to 36CFR parts 301 and 602 the charity institutions require finance from the public charities. The UCP Research and Educational Fund is one of the most important non-government agencies that sponsors The necessary support that relates to the prevention of the related palsy. The Assistive Technology is referred to equipment or a system that can be purchased, modified or customized to increase the functional capabilities of the disabled.

Social Graces:

It is not only the responsibility of the websites to be able to flash these sites but also the responsibilities of every individual to take part in discussions that would at least raise certain opinions. This should concern the areas of education, employment, housing parenting and families, Health, sports, Travel, products and services. The UCP Advocacy and the Public Policies help legislation of the correct laws and regulations for the rights and duties of the disabled individuals. Alike people like the Oscar Nominee William. H.Macy who is the ambassador of the UCP and also one of the trustees Emmy award nominated Cheryl Hines is advocating on behalf of the UCP. Louis Topspeed Albornoz a drag car superstar is advocating for UCP through endorsements for his car. Thus the enlisting of thee names helps to be able to foster the feeling of brotherhood and care for the others less fortunate then us.

There are various effects of cerebral palsy observed on the human body. Mental retardation, speech problem, communication problems, abnormal body posture and abnormal behavior are a few to name.

About Cerebral Palsy Clinics

Cerebral palsy is a disorder which unfortunately cannot be cured. It is a disorder that remains in the body until the destiny. However there are certainly effective therapies available that can minimize the effect of the disorder to a certain extent. There are a lot of institutes and organizations and some associated organizations across the world that are working for the cause of the betterment of the people affected by the deadly disorder. The organizations run independent clinics which help children and adults with CP, achieve independence by providing the physical therapy treatments free of cost or at a rate that can be afforded by the families of these people.

There are various therapies and treatments that are included in the development programs of the patients. Case of each patient is undertaken individually and completely studied in detail and then a treatment is decided for that patient. The treatment could be of a short time or a long time depending on the severity of the disorder that has affected the patient. The list of the therapies that are available in these clinics are speech concerned programs, posture related activities, improvement on communication and thinking of the CP affected people. These activities make a very short but important and common case lists. There are other programs and medications carried by the clinics depending on the cases that are commonly observed in a specific region. These clinics and the organizations are certainly helping the cause of the institutions by serving them in a right sense.

Causes of cerebral palsy:

The exact cause of the cerebral palsy is not known in the most of the cases. However it is known, who are the children at the high risk of developing cerebral palsy. Premature and very small baby who does not cry in the first five minutes after delivery are at high risk of developing this disorder. Babies, who needs to be on a ventilator for over four weeks and those who has bleeding in brain has a high risk of developing cerebral palsy. Babies with congenital malformations in organs such as the heart, kidneys, or spine are also more likely to develop this disorder.

Treatment of cerebral palsy:

There is no absolute cure available for this disease but treatment can improve a child's abilities. Some patients can even enjoy a nearly normal life, if proper treatment is given to them. The treatment of cerebral palsy is different to every person. Most commonly some drugs to control seizures and muscle spasm is given to the patients. Special braces are given to the people to overcome the muscle imbalance. The treatment of the cerebral palsy should start as early as possible, because it gives better chances to the child against the development of any disability.

Cerebral palsy is characterized by the inability to fully control the motor area of our brain, particularly muscle control and co-ordination of movements. It is a general term for a group of permanent brain injuries that affects an infant in the womb, during the birth or in months following the birth. It is a result of episode that causes lack of oxygen to the brain. Characterized by the disruption of motor skills, cerebral palsy is also a form of static encephalopathy. It is an umbrella term used to describe a group of chronic disorders impairing control of movement that appear in the first few years of life and generally do not worsen over time.

Effects of Cerebral Palsy: -

Side effects of cerebral palsy include seizures, spasms, visual problems, hearing problems, hyperactivity disorder, speech problems, and learning problems. Approximately half of all people with cerebral palsy suffer from seizures. Seizures occur when there is abnormal brain activity (the brain attempts to send abnormal messages very close together). Seizures affect people in different ways – some people may stop moving and stare, others may fall down. Some can cause a person to fall and shake violently. They are generally not dangerous and will only last a few minutes. Normally people do not tend to grow by their brain as compared to their age.

The movement of the limbs is affected in cerebral palsy. It is because, the signals transmitted by the brains do not reach the muscles correctly or sometimes they just do not reach. Even the speech of the person is affected in cerebral palsy. Lack of communication is also observed in this disorder. Perception and behavior of a cerebral palsy affected person is not normal. Since the limbs and muscles are affected, the posture of the person does not appear to be normal. Also the speech of the person is affected. Since it is caused due to the lack of oxygen to the brain, the thinking capacity of the brain is also affected.

Cerebral palsy is incurable. However, many therapies can be use to help ease its symptoms. Guidance from the therapists such as physician, orthopedist, psychologist, occupational therapist and speech-language therapist along with a social worker could help ease out the problems of cerebral palsy affected persons.

Cerebral palsy is defined as group of chronic disorders that affect the body movements and muscle co-ordination. Children with cerebral palsy or CP may not be able to use the muscles in their body in a normal way. It is characterized by an inability to fully control the motor function, due to lack of supply of oxygen or accidents affecting your brain. Cerebral palsy is a non-communicable, non-progressive disease. Children having this disorder will have it for their entire lives.

Effects on speech due to CP: -

There are various parts of the body that are affected due to cerebral palsy. Depending on the disorder and the damage caused to the brain cases like muscle tightness, involuntary movement, disturbance in mobility, abnormal sensation, sight or sound or speech affecting could occur along with other side effects such as retardness, irregular body posture and many such conditions.

Speech is one the most common areas that is affected with other disabilities. A person affected with cerebral palsy is not able to speak properly as result of which his communication with other people is hampered. The damage of the brain interferes with the muscles in the body as the brain is not able to send proper signals to the muscles. Sometimes the signals passed on by the brain don't even reach its proper destination. Tongue is a muscle which needs signals from the brain in order to function it properly. Since in CP the brain of that person is affected, they cannot speak properly. So a lack of communication with other people also hampers the progress of that particular person.

CP is neither a life threatening condition, nor does it has any type of barriers affecting the progress of a person affected with the disorder. Cerebral palsy cannot be cured, but efforts can be made in order to minimize its effects. There are many foundations and organizations that help the people affected in speech in CP to minimize their problems by conducting proper classes. This could certainly help these people lead a better, happier and a progressive life.

What Is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy refers to a group of neurological disorders that affect normal coordinated movement. It is a permanent physical disability and is non progressive. Cerebral palsy patients have limited movements, speech and learning disabilities. Cerebral palsy may affect an infant in the womb, during or after birth. Damage to the brain's motor areas disrupts its normal ability to control and co-ordinate movements. This condition is characterized by weakness, paralysis and motor dysfunction.

Types of Cerebral Palsy

There are three types of cerebral palsy. Some individuals can be affected by one or all of them. Spastic Palsy is the most common type. It is characterized by stiff, jerky and difficult movements. Ataxic Cerebral Palsy causes low muscle tone and poor co-ordination of movements. Children with this type of cerebral palsy appear unsteady and shaky. Athetoid Cerebral Palsy is characterized by involuntary, purposeless actions. Mixed Cerebral Palsy features the stiff and tight muscle tone of the Spastic type and the involuntary movements of the Athetoid type.

Distinguishing features of Athetoid Cerebral Palsy

Athetoid cerebral palsy occurs due to extensive damage to the cerebellum or the basal ganglia. Around 10 percent of children suffering from cerebral palsy have this type. It is also known as Dyskinetic cerebral palsy. The cerebellum and basal ganglia are responsible for processing signals that bring about smooth, coordinated movements and control proper posture. Damage to these crucial areas leads to involuntary and purposeless actions, especially in the arms and legs. These involuntary movements interfere with speaking, eating and other voluntary, coordinated movements. Involuntary grimacing, problems in swallowing, slurred speech and drooling characterize a child suffering from Athetoid cerebral palsy. These movements increase during periods of emotional stress and disappear during sleep. Such children have low muscle tone and have difficulty in maintaining correct posture and for sitting and walking. The arms and legs of children suffering from this type of cerebral palsy flutter and move uncontrollably. Patients may have difficulty coordinating muscle movements needed for speech. This condition is referred to as Dysarthria.

Athetoid cerebral palsy can be treated like the other types, by therapy. Speech and physical therapy helps patients lead a normal life.

The term cerebral palsy refers to the damage caused to the motor areas of the brain affecting the body movement and muscle co-ordination. It occurs to a child during infancy or after a short period of birth. It was first identified by an English surgeon William Little in the year 1860. The disorder is caused due to the lack of supply of oxygen or an accident causing an injury to the brain. Also known as CP, it is the most common childhood physical disability. The incidence in the developed countries is approximately 2- 2.5 cases every thousand births. It is a non-communicable and a non-productive disorder.

The Cerebral Palsy Patients

Studies suggest that no two people with the disorder are alike even if they have the same diagnosis. There are three different cases in which different body parts are affected. This classification is based on the severity of the disorder and its effects no the body. Hemiplegia in which one side of the body is more affected as compared to the other. Diplegia in which lower body is more affected than the upper body and Quadriplegia in which all the four limbs of the body are affected. The causes though are not certain. But infections to the brain and a lack of supply to it, premature delivery, rigorous shaking of the child to make him sleep, accident during the fetal development, severe brain infections, jaundice and other such causes are considered to be likely for affecting the brain causing cerebral palsy.

Effects of Cerebral Palsy

There are many side effects that are observed due to cerebral palsy. These are characterized by abnormal muscle tone and posture of the body, weakening of muscles and limbs and reflexes. Along with this the mental development of the patient is hampered. He may take time in acquiring the learning skills. The behavior of that person becomes abnormal. Also affected are the speech, vision and hearing abilities of the person. Due to this the person is not able to communicate with other people properly. The balance of the patient may also be affected due to the damage to the motor areas and the basal ganglia of the brain. Due to these effects the person becomes a social misfit.

Medication and Cure

There is no permanent treatment for Cerebral Palsy, but various forms of therapy can help the patient with CP more effectively. The posture of his body, the speech areas and the mental abilities like learning and social behavior should be given more concentration by the experts. There should also be a proper help to develop the motor skills of the patient as much as possible or to compensate for the lack of them. Drugs sometimes are recommended to ease the spasticity or the abnormal movement of the patient. These measures could surely help the person to development and progress of his life.

Although the causes for CP are not known, studies reveal that Cerebral Palsy could happen to a child where there is lack of supply to his brain, an accident in which an injury to the brain is caused, premature birth, medical casualness while delivery of the child, infection to the brain, very low birth rate, bleeding in the brain, shaking the baby in order to make him asleep and many more reasons. There are many cases in which the causes are not known. Studies are on for the research and development of these causes and cure for it. A trauma and infection through various viruses is also one of the major reasons for a child to get affected with Cerebral Palsy.

Effects of CP on Children:

There are various effects are observed on children suffering from this deadly disorder. The effect depends on the severity of the disorder. If the effect is severe, then a child could also seem to be a mentally retarded one. The other effects observed are muscle paining, seizures, vision or speech or hearing disabilities, respiratory problems, and bowel problems, bone abnormalities and mental retardation. Babies suffering with CP are often slow to reach the developmental milestones, such as rolling, sitting crawling or walking. The posture of the child is affected because of weakening of limbs and muscles. The child has communication problems with other people as its speech is affected. Some times the behavior is also abnormal. A child affected with this disorder can live a life not more than twenty to twenty- five years from his current age.

Cerebral Palsy is a non- progressive and a non-communicable disorder. It cannot be cured either. However steps can be taken to reduce the effect of the disorder. A good guidance from the physicians and psychiatrists could see them live a productive life.

Cerebral palsy is neither progressive nor communicative. It is also not curable.

More definitions on cerebral palsy: -

Some of the biological research institutions define it as a disorder caused by brain damage occurring at or before birth and marked by muscular impairment. It can also be defined as a group of disorders characterized by the loss of movement or loss other nerve functions. There can be various ways of defining a cerebral palsy depending upon the areas that are affected during that disorder. If it is related to muscular movements of a body, then it can be defined as a group of disorders affecting body movement and muscular co-ordination.

In medical terms, it is defined as the name CP given to a collection of movement disorders caused by damage to the brain cells. If the areas like speech or memory are affected, then it could also be defined as the collection of movement disorders affecting the speech and memory capacity along with the posture of the person.

Even though cerebral palsy cannot be cured fully, its effect can be nullified to some extent. Education therapy and applied technology can help persons with cerebral palsy lead a productive life. It is important to know that cerebral palsy is not a disease or an illness. It isn't contagious and it doesn't get worse. A proper guidance from the experts and physicians can see these people live a better and a quality life.

Cerebral palsy refers to a group of chronic conditions affecting body movements and muscle co-ordination. It is caused by one or more specific areas of the brain, usually occurring during fetal development or during infancy. It can also occur before, during or shortly following the birth. The term cerebral refers to the halves of the brain and palsy refers to a disorder that affects your body movement. If a person has cerebral palsy means that some part of his brain is not functioning either to some extent or totally. The muscles and bones of the person affected by cerebral palsy become weak as there is a lack of communication between his brain and muscles of his body. Cerebral palsy is neither progressive nor communicative. It is also not curable.

Life expectancy in CP: -

The survival prospects of children with CP are frequently under estimated. For example physicians often give a life expectancy of 10 additional years or even less. Studies reveal that survival prospect of for those surviving the critical first few years is more important. A child who is unable to roll or sit can live a life for about 20 years even if it is CP affected. A child who is just able to lift his head when lying on stomach can live for about 23 years whereas the child who sits on a wheel chair, but does not assist in moving it will live for 38 to 40 years. The severity of disorder affects the life expectancy, but many children with severe disabilities live well into adulthood. A person, who is severely mentally retarded, is immobile, and not toilet trained is expected to live for only 4 to 5 years more, than his current age. Studies reveal that mobility or immobility is the best point to predict the mortality risk. If other people could feed a person with immobility, then the life expectancy of that person would be doubled. If some mobility was also present, then life expectancy would be doubled again. Another reason for a short life expectancy for a CP affected person is circulatory system or heart disease.

Cerebral Palsy is a non-progressive disease and does not grow with respect to time. It is not curable either. But its effect can be minimized by a proper guidance by the experts and help the patient live a better and productive life.

Cerebral Palsy is the medical way of defining a group of permanent brain injuries that affects an infant in the womb, during birth or in months following birth. It is a result of episode that causes lack of oxygen to the brain. It is characterized by a disruption of motor skills, with symptoms such as spasticity, paralysis, or seizures. Cerebral palsy is a form of static encephalopathy.

More about cerebral palsy: -

Cerebral Palsy describes a group of chronic disorders impairing control of movement that appear in the first few years of life and generally do not worsen over time. The term cerebral refers to the brain's two halves, or hemispheres, and palsy describes any disorder that impairs control of body movement. It is a disorder movement and posture, which is apparent in the early years. The damage to the motor part of the brain causes an interruption in the signals that the brain tries to send to the muscles. Adjacent parts of the brain may also be injured and this may lead to poor sight, deafness or other perceptual difficulties. Children with cerebral palsy may also have difficulties in learning. It also affects their muscles and also makes them weak. The motor disorders of cerebral palsy are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, cognition, communication, perception, and/or behavior, and/or by a seizure disorder.

The incidence in developed countries is approximately 2-2.5 per thousand births. It has been suggested that no two persons are alike even if they have the same diagnosis. Cerebral palsy is divided into four major classifications to describe the different movement impairments. These classifications reflect the area of brain damaged. The four classifications are:

(1) Spastic
(2) Athetoid
(3) Ataxic and
(4) Mixed.

Spastic cerebral palsy is further classified by topography, dependent on the region of the body affected. These typography classifications include:

(1) hemiplegia in which one side is being more affected than the other
(2) diplegia in which the lower body is being more affected than the upper body and
(3) quadriplegia where all four limbs affected equally.

Causes of cerebral palsy are unknown. In very few conditions, the actual cause could be infections, malnutrition and significant head injury in very early childhood. All types of cerebral palsy are characterized by abnormal muscle tone, posture, reflexes, or motor development and coordination.

In approximately 70 percent of cases, cerebral palsy results from events occurring before birth that can disrupt the normal development of the brain. A small number of children also develop brain injuries in the first months or years of life that can result in cerebral palsy. In many cases, the cause of cerebral palsy in a child is unknown. Some of the causes of cerebral palsy are:

Infections during the pregnancy period:

Certain infections in the mother such as including rubella or German measles, cytomegalovirus or mild viral infection and toxoplasmosis or mild parasitic infection can cause brain damage and result in cerebral palsy. Maternal infections involving the placental membranes may contribute to cerebral palsy in full-term as well as premature babies. Reproductive or urinary tract infections also may increase the risk of premature delivery which is another risk factor for cerebral palsy.

The fetus not receiving sufficient oxygen:

If the placenta is not functioning properly or it tears away from the uterus wall before delivery, the fetus may not receive sufficient oxygen resulting in risk of cerebral palsy.

Premature delivery:

Premature babies who weigh less than 3.33 pounds are up to 30 times more prone to develop cerebral palsy than full-term babies. Many of these premature babies suffer from bleeding in the brain, which can damage delicate brain tissue, or develop periventricular leukomalacia that is destruction of nerves around the fluid-filled cavities or ventricles in the brain.

Asphyxia or lack of oxygen during labor and delivery:

Very few of the type of brain injuries that can result in cerebral palsy are caused by asphyxia.

Diseases of Blood:

Rh disease is an incompatibility between the blood of the mother and her fetus and it can cause severe jaundice and brain damage leading to cerebral palsy. Blood clotting disorders or thrombophilias in either mother or baby also may increase the risk.

Severe jaundice:

Jaundice is caused by the build-up of a pigment called bilirubin in the blood and sometimes it becomes severe. If untreated, severe jaundice can pose a risk of permanent brain damage resulting in athetoid cerebral palsy.

Birth defects:

Babies having brain malformations, various genetic diseases and other physical birth defects have an increased risk of cerebral palsy.

Approximately 10 percent of children with cerebral palsy acquire it after birth due to brain injuries that occur during the first two years of life including brain infections such as meningitis and head injuries.

It is normally when there is a lack of supply to the brain or an accident in which the brain of the child is affected. It is also defined as the loss of the movement or loss of nerves. The brain is unable to send proper messages or signals to the various body parts due to which involuntary body movements are observed. It happens during infancy or shortly after the birth of a child.

Education of a CP Victim

Education of a cerebral palsy affected person or a child is one of the most important and significant steps in making his/ hers life a progressive one. The term education not only refers to the academic part of the child with CP but also the other aspects such as improving learning abilities, focusing on the areas of speech and communication and many more depending on the severity of the disorder and the areas affected by it.

The various organizations and other related institutions are focusing on the developmental aspects of these people. In these institutions, proper care of these people is taken with respect to their education and other development programs. The main aim of these institutions is to help these CP affected people live an independent and a progressive life. Also the teachers are given a proper training on how to help to establish communication with these people. Physicians and psychiatrists focus on the body posture and mental abilities of the sufferers. A proper diagnosis of the disorder affecting each individual is taken and then accordingly the treatment is carried out.

It is observed that no two persons with the same diagnosis are alike and hence different treatment is carried. They are also helped for improving the motor skills of their brain. Significant success has been achieved by these people. It has been observed that learning abilities and communication abilities along with highly intellectual thinking is improving because of these educational and other developmental programs.

So it has been proved that a proper education and guidance from experts such as physicians and psychiatrists has helped to reduce the effect to a considerable measure. Miracles of people being cured almost fully are happening even though the disorder cannot be totally cured.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy refers to a group of permanent brain injuries that affect normal muscle coordination and movement. It is life-long, non-progressive neurological disorder that disrupts the communication between the brain and the muscles. This condition is characterized by weakness, paralysis and motor dysfunction. Children suffering from cerebral palsy have limited motor skills and learning disabilities.

Cause of Cerebral Palsy

Though the exact cause of the disease is unknown, all cases of cerebral palsy are attributed to brain damage. This could possibly occur in the mother's womb, during or after birth. Premature babies are at a greater risk of acquiring this disorder. Conditions like asphyxia, hypoxia of the brain and infections such as meningitis and encephalitis are also causative factors. Seizures and intraventricular hemorrhages can lead to extensive brain damage.

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

There are chiefly three types of cerebral palsy, namely: Spastic, Ataxic, Athetoid and Mixed cerebral palsy. Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common type. Almost 10 percent of cerebral palsy cases suffer from Ataxic cerebral palsy. In the Ataxic type of cerebral palsy, the muscles become very weak. Patients often experience instability and unsteadiness. Poor balance and unsteady walking characterize these patients. Such patients walk with their feet widely spaced. Low muscle tone and poor coordination is observed. This rare form of cerebral palsy affects depth perception and creates difficulty in holding small objects. Such children take longer time to complete normal tasks.

Treatment

Individual lines of treatment differ, as no two cases of cerebral palsy are the same. A therapeutic exercise program should be a part of the treatment. As therapy requires a lot of time commitment, it is advised that parents and caretakers also take active part in it. Physical therapy helps develop the large muscles in the body. This improves movement and balance. Speech and language therapy helps control the jaw and mouth muscles. Drugs can help prevent seizures. It is equally necessary to build the child's self-esteem for better progress. Therapy for speech, learning, social and emotional development can help the child achieve his/her maximum potential.

Cerebral palsy is a group of neurological disorders that affects the normal motor functions of the brain. It leads to disruption of the communication between the brain and the muscles. Cerebral palsy is a permanent disorder that causes restricted motor functions and learning disabilities in children.

Causes and Symptoms

The main cause of cerebral palsy is brain damage. This could occur in the mother's womb, during or after birth. Premature babies stand a higher chance of getting this disease. Other risk factors include multiple births, intraventricular bleeding and asphyxia (oxygen shortage in the brain). Brain infections such as meningitis and head injuries also lead to cerebral palsy.

Children with cerebral palsy find it difficult to perform simple tasks. Such children reach the developmental milestones later in life, such as rolling over, sitting and walking. They also experience seizures and involuntary, jerky movements.

Research on Cerebral Palsy

Medical researchers and scientists worldwide are using their expertise towards better understanding, diagnosis and treatment of cerebral palsy. The NINDS (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke), the NICHD (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development), agencies within the government and non-profit organizations provide support and funding for cerebral palsy research. Scientists need to study normal fetal brain development to understand when an infant's brain shows abnormal development. It is more important to find methods of prevention, as it is the only way out. Scientists are trying to find the genes responsible for causing cerebral palsy by various genetic screening techniques. This could prove whether genetic defects cause brain malformations and chromosomal aberrations. Research has proved that bleeding in the brain releases very high amounts of a chemical called Glutamate. Although it helps neurons communicate, excessive amounts can kill the neurons. Studying this toxic chemical can lead researchers to come up with a drug to counter its harmful effects.

Scientists are examining the potential of Neurotrophin (a substance that protects neurons from damage) to prevent brain damage. Researchers are in the process of developing devices that measure electrical activity in the brain and behavioral tests. This will help identify infants at the risk of cerebral palsy before they are born.

Various new therapies are also being worked upon. Research in this field will help widen the horizons and provide a bright future for patients with cerebral palsy.

Although cerebral palsy cannot be completely cured, treatment can often improve a child's capabilities. There is no standard treatment that works for all patients. A treatment plan can include some approaches such as drugs to control seizures and muscle spasms, counseling for emotional and psychological needs, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and behavioral therapy.

Physical Therapy:

Physical therapy begins shortly after cerebral palsy is diagnosed. Physical therapy involves the use of specific exercises to prevent the weakening or deterioration of muscles from disuse that is known as disuse atrophy and it is also used to avoid contracting of muscle that is muscles fixed in a rigid or abnormal position. Contracting of muscle is one of the most common and serious complications of cerebral palsy and can seriously disrupt balance.

Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Behavioral Therapy:

As a child grows up to approach school age, physical therapy helps the child by improving his or her ability to sit and to move independently or in a wheelchair. Many children also benefit from occupational therapy that helps the child to develop skills such as feeding, dressing or using the bathroom. Speech therapy works to identify specific difficulties a child with cerebral palsy may have and to help the child to learn to use special communication devices. Behavioral therapy uses psychological theory and techniques to assist the child with his or her physical, speech, or occupational therapy. Counseling for emotional and psychological challenges may be needed at any age and especially during adolescence.

Drug Therapy:

Drug Therapy is effective in preventing seizures associated with cerebral palsy in many patients. Drugs may be used to control spasticity for short periods. The medications used most often are those that relax the brain and body such as diazepam, which block signals sent from the spinal cord to contract the muscles such as baclofen, and which interfere with the process of muscle contraction such as dantrolene. The use of drugs may cause serious side effects and their long-term effects on the developing nervous system are unknown. The drugs that are often prescribed are anticholinergics, which work by reducing the activity of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that helps some brain cells to communicate and trigger muscle contraction.

Cerebral Palsy also known as CP also known as CP is caused due to the injury to the brain. It is a disorder caused by the damage to the brain during or shortly after birth affecting the ability to control movement and the body posture. It is caused due to the lack of supply of oxygen to the brain or an accident in which there could be an injury to the brain. CP is not a disease and so it is not a progressive, communicable, inherited or a primary cause of death. Studies reveal that there are approximately 3000 new cases of cerebral palsy per year in the developed countries.

Causes of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy may be caused due to various reasons. The main reasons are the lack of supply to the oxygen to the brain and an accident in which there is an injury to the brain. The other subordinate reasons are infection during pregnancy, vigorous shaking of the child to make him sleep, infections to the brain during fetal development, severe jaundice, and many other reasons. Although the cause of this disorder is not identified, the above mentioned reasons are the evidences that took place before the child or the person was affected by cerebral palsy.

Effects of Cerebral Palsy

The common effects that are found in the students are weakening of muscles and bones due to which the body posture is affected, learning disorders, visual, speech and hearing disorders, and abnormal behavior. Abnormal sensation and perception, mental retardation, disturbance in gait and mobility are also observed in that person who is affected with CP.

Treatments and Developmental Techniques

Early identifications of cerebral palsy can lessen the developmental problems and lead to appropriate intervention. Educators, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, speech- language pathologists, psychologists and physicians can assist families by providing information and education. Some of the activities that are included in the development of these students are speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, medical intervention, early education and assistive technology. There are positive signs shown by these students who are undergoing various treatments. In a survey, the students demonstrated the characteristics of advanced academic abilities, broad base of knowledge, quickness in learning and many other intellectual skills. So it has been proved that good developmental techniques applied to the students can help them leading real productive lives.

The term cerebral refers to the two hemispheres of the brain and palsy refers to the deadly disorder that affects the muscle co-ordination and speech of the person.

About the Foundation: -

There are many foundations on cerebral palsy formed all over the world. The main aim of these foundations is the same; helping and rehabilitation of these people affected with CP to lead a better and a progressive life. These foundations raise self-awareness and acceptance of disability amongst the normal people and also the people affected with the deadly disorder. One more mission of these foundations is permanent and continuous funding to support itself and other associations also. These organizations perform the activities like family support, adult advocacy, supported employment to the people needing money and counseling to the families and many more activities that are related to a particular foundation in that region.

The foundations are dedicated to helping people with disabilities live as independently as they can. They normally help themselves to achieve these goals by organizing the some supported living programs for these people. People living in situations that could not allow them the chances to lead a better life have come and lead their lives, the way they want, happily. Also the employees such as doctors, teachers and speech related experts, physicians and psychiatrists to name a few that are supported by the foundation make meaningful contributions to the community. These people are given proper training before their job actually starts. In this way these foundations not only help to reduce the employment but also restore the quality of treatment. The patients in these foundations are either given a free medical advice or some concession on it.

The only thing these foundations need is good support from the government and common people. So it is our responsibility to see that even we contribute something towards it. Your help could certainly prove to be beneficial to these organizations in changing the lives of CP affected people.

Early signs of cerebral palsy usually appear before a child is 3 years of age, and often parents are the first to suspect that their infant is not developing motor skills the way he normally should. Infants suffering from cerebral palsy are frequently quite slow compared to other normal babies to reach developmental milestones, such as rolling over, sitting, crawling, smiling, or walking. This is known as developmental delay. However, there can be an appearance of more severe symptoms during birth.

Some children affected with cerebral palsy have an abnormal muscle tone. A decreased muscle tone is known as hypotonia, a condition in which the baby may seem flaccid and relaxed or even floppy. An increased muscle tone is called hypertonia, a condition in which the baby may seem stiff or rigid. In some cases, the baby may have an early period of hypotonia and then a progression to hypertonia after the first 2 to 3 months of life. Affected children can also have an unusual posture or favorability for one side of their body.

Early signs of cerebral palsy at birth:

A new born baby could be at a risk of cerebral palsy if he/ she has difficulty in breathing, trouble in eating, trouble in eliminating or has a lack of certain reflexes.

Early signs at three months:

A three-month old baby could be at a risk of cerebral palsy if he/ she doesn't respond to your voice, doesn't follow toys with her eyes, doesn't use facial expressions, has either unusually stiff or very floppy muscles, consistently uses and favors one side of his body more often than the other and doesn't enjoy being around people.

Early signs at four to five months:

A four-month old baby may be at a risk of cerebral palsy if he/ she has difficulty in getting objects to his mouth, doesn't turn his head to locate sounds or doesn't smile spontaneously.

Early signs at six months:

A six-month old infant may be at a risk of cerebral palsy if he/ she cannot sit without help, doesn't laugh or make sounds or doesn't actively reach for toys.

Early signs at seven to eight months:

An eight-month old child may be at a risk of cerebral palsy if he/ she doesn't follow toys with both eyes at both near and far ranges, doesn't actively reach for toys, doesn't bear some weight on her legs, doesn't try to attract attention through actions, doesn't babble and doesn't play games.

Although many therapies are available for treating cerebral palsy, here is a brief overview of few of the most basic approaches to the therapies used to help a child achieve his optimum level of functioning.

Aquatic Therapy:

Aquatic therapy is an occupational therapy performed in a heated (between 92 and 96 degrees) pool so that the warm temperature helps to decrease spasticity and the buoyancy of the water enables the patient an increased range of motion.

Auditory Integration Therapy:

Auditory integration therapy helps people with disorders of the auditory system such as hearing loss or distortion. Auditory integration therapy also helps children with autism, dyslexia, learning disorders, pervasive developmental disorders, central auditory processing disorder, attention deficit disorder and depression.

Baclofen Therapy:

This therapy is most effective for patients with severe spasticity and consists of administering baclofen orally or through a pump implanted near the spine that injects baclofen directly into the spinal cord. Baclofen therapy is beneficial to reduce tone, spasms and pain and increase mobility.

Botox Therapy:

Botox therapy comprises of injecting botulinum toxin into spastic muscles to weaken them. This therapy can help to decrease scissoring of legs and spasticity even after the injections ear off but the muscle weakness is temporary and the shots must be repeated every six months

Constrained Induced Therapy:
This therapy is used mainly for stroke victims and is based on the idea that the brain can "rewire" itself if the patient is encouraged to use the more-affected parts of the body and not fall back on the more functional limbs. This therapy has been effective in improving the quality of movement in many patients.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy:

Craino-sacral therapy is a gentle therapy that enhances the functioning of cranio-sacral system that is the brain and spinal cord and in this system restrictions are released by using light touch. This treatment is effective in making the gait steady the gait and properly alignment of the body.

Dance Therapy and Music Therapy:

Dance therapy encourages movement and rhythm awareness and it can help children to develop better motor planning skills, socialization and group interaction skills and increased awareness of personal and surrounding spaces. Music therapy helps people with neurological, mental and behavioral disorders. Music improvisation, listening, song writing, lyric discussion, music and imagery and performance can all be part of therapy sessions.

Manual Therapy:

Manual therapy puts muscles into a state of relaxation before stretching them thereby allowing patients to achieve an increased range of movement. It treats both soft tissue and joint structures.

Vojta (Reflexlocaomotion) Therapy:

This special therapy is primarily enhances the motor development and it also has added benefits of improvements in cognition, fine motor, breathing and digestion.

The journals that are mentioned in relation to the Cerebral Palsy are the research work done by creation specialist of their respective fields. The works are reflected in books, pamphlets and through the Internet. The Internet also provides an insight tot all these research works. The neurologists and the pediatrician journals offer parameters on the disorder of the posture or the movements due to the lesions of the developing brains. There are reports on the variety of clinical manifestations or the symptoms for the Cerebral Palsy (CP). This deals with the diagnostics of the children suffering from CP .The Orthotic Journal asserts the primary neurological impairment of the brain the young children, treatment regime and other information. It also gives information about the progressive neuromuscular deformity. It provides treatment goals to correct to prevent the deformity, provide a base of the support, help in training in the skills and improve the efficiency of the muscle movements.

Professional help:

The Prosthestis journal gives information on the areas of the upper motor neuron disorders. It provides researched articles on the modalities on the physical deformities, orthotic approaches to control the lower extremities and the corrective surgical procedures. It involves the use of the developmental biomechanics, neuro-developmental techniques and collaboration with the knowledgeable therapists. It understands the orthopedic and the neurologic assessment, the functional and the biochemical developmental status and certain junctures for interventions too.

Helping with the help of plans:

Certain pother journals provide the information regarding prevention of certain deformity that may be in any stage, correction of the soft tissue deformity and supporting the segments to promote the correct movements. The CP management journals talk about the heterogeneous groups of non-progressive motor disorders that are cause due tot injury caused during or after the birth. This type of management is well maintained in the multidisciplinary set up only. This also advocates the individuals a home- based management plan that helps in breaking news and certain amount of the counseling required for the child and the parents. This also provides with a comprehensive assessment of the child's growth and the mental makes ups. This is an individualized plan with all the short term and the long-term goals.

The term Cerebral Palsy refers to the group of chronic conditions affecting the body movements and muscle co-ordination during infancy or shortly after the birth. Cerebral Palsy is caused due to lack of supply of oxygen to the brain or an accident causing injury to the brain. It is a non- progressive and non- communicable disorder. It is not inherited either. People often mistake it as the disease and not a disorder.

People suffering from the disorder are affected by the disease due to lack of supply of oxygen or an accident causing injury to the brain during the early period of birth. Although there are other conditions that are other conditions that are responsible for causing the disorder, the actual cause of cerebral palsy is still not known. There are various effects observed on a human body. Effects such as mental retardation, lack of muscle co-ordination, abnormal body posture and behavior and communication problems are some of the effects of cerebral palsy to name a few.

Cerebral Palsy Schools

Although cerebral palsy is not curable, efforts are made to minimize the effects of the disorder. Thankfully, the government as well as the private organizations, initiates a number of efforts to help these people affected with cerebral palsy. There are a number of schools opened by the government and private institutions all over the world. The main aim of these schools is the development of these people along with making them to learn to live independently. There are teachers and other people actively taking part in these organizations only for the purpose of social development. These people are either medical experts such as doctors, physicians or psychiatrists or they are the common people who are willingly ready to work for these CP affected people.

These experts and social workers are assigned a job and given a proper training for being able to communicate with these people. They are trained in their respective professions and the students are given the utmost priority of helping themselves to develop. The areas like body posture, effective communication and speech areas are given preference depending on the severity of the disorder affecting the individual. Case of individual is taken personally and the treatment is accordingly given to the patient. There are miraculous effects observed on these students like improvement in speech and communication and intellectual thinking to mention a few.

Food, water, clothing and playing share one thing in common – they are a part of a cerebral palsy child's basic necessities to thrive in life. It is a necessity for all children to play in their lives. Notwithstanding a child's interest and abilities, there are cerebral palsy equipments that encourage his/ her love of play. Cerebral palsy equipment can be an important part of the learning experience and development of motor skills for a cerebral palsy patient. When one has to select equipment that can be of assistance during the developmental stage of the child, one should consider the particular needs of the child, what sparks their interest and what are their skill levels.
