Baby's heart within womb starts beating around fifth week of pregnancy. Average fetal heart rate ranges between 110 and 160 beats per minute. This is much faster than an adult heart rate, which ranges from 60-100 beats per minute. Changes in the fetal heart rate, which occur with contractions, form a pattern. Baby's heart rate increases with mother's movement and with uterine contractions. Baby's heart rate may drop during a contraction but return to normal immediately following the end of the contraction. A normal fetal heart rate ranges from 110 to 160 beats per minute and can vary within this range. Sometimes mother's position is compressing umbilicus so ask her to change her position and then check fetal heart rate.

What is heart rate?

Very simply, your heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute. You can measure your heart rate by feeling your pulse - the rhythmic expansion and contraction (or throbbing) of an artery as blood is forced through it by the regular contractions of the heart. The rate at which the heart expands and contracts every minute is measured in terms of Beats Per Minute (BPM) and is used to evaluate a person's general health.

Maximum heart rate generally declines with age from about 220 beats per minute in childhood to about 160 beats per minute at age 60. This fall in heart rate is fairly linear decreasing by approximately 1 beat per minute per year. There is no strong evidence to suggest that training influences the decline in max heart rate. It should be remembered that individuals of the same age might have quite different max heart rates-therefore it is more accurate to calculate this value by undergoing a stress-test than by using an age-related formula, resting heart rate is greatly influenced by endurance training.

The heart rate is a term used to describe the frequency of the cardiac cycle. It is considered one of the four vital signs.
