			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For many people who have problems with sleeping at night, the question most commonly asked is, &#034;What causes insomnia?&#034;  One of the biggest causes of insomnia is being over weight which can cause sleep apnea and will not allow the person to get enough sleep at night. The body is being starved for sleep even though the person has no idea that this is happening. The best cure for this type of insomnia is to lose all of the extra weight. This is easier said than done, but it is the best way.</p>
<p>The stressful life that people lead is also what causes insomnia. People start with getting up and drinking a pot of coffee before even leaving the house. Some people might not even eat breakfast. At work people don&#039;t stop for breaks or even lunch. Instead, many people keep drinking coffee throughout the day. Add a stressful meeting and some things not going right and it is easy to see the stress people put on themselves. When the people go home they often cannot sleep and lie there hoping to sleep. This accumulates quickly until the body has no idea of what is coming next. The sleep just doesn&#039;t come and that is what causes insomnia as well.</p>
<p>Another thing that causes insomnia is breaking the sleep habit on the weekends. People might stay up all night at a party and then sleep all day. Adding alcohol to the problem doesn&#039;t help either. Sleeping all day might feel good on a Sunday but the problem is that it can cause the body to try to make up that sleep during the workday.</p>
<p>What Causes Insomnia In The First Place</p>
<p>Many times people will go to a doctor to get help with insomnia. The doctor may ask when the insomnia began. People don&#039;t usually notice when insomnia begins because they are pushing themselves. It is hard to pinpoint the activity that caused the problem.</p>
<p>People need to go back to the point when they first asked, &#034;What is causing insomnia?&#034;  Sometimes this will jog one&#039;s memory as to the beginning of the problem. Most can only give a generalization of the time when sleeping became hard. This is normal because most people don&#039;t keep records of things like that. Once the doctor has at least an idea of what caused insomnia, he can better prescribe the treatment or prescriptions that will be needed.</p>

<p>The most popular insomnia drug used is Ambien. Ambien is only given by prescription and it is powerful. For most people, one single dose is more than enough to put them asleep. It can become habit forming so it is best used sparingly such as those people who need to get back onto their own sleep cycle. In most cases, insurance will cover the cost and any doctor can prescribe the medicine.</p>
<p>Some people suffer from insomnia in a more serious fashion. There are insomnia drugs that can be used for a longer term that will work also. One of these drugs, Trazadone, is used mostly as an anti-depression drug but it also works for insomnia. Trazadone has the effect of creating drowsiness in most people. Some insomnia drugs mixed with alcohol can do severe damage or even kill the abuser. Those people who use illegal drugs are the most likely to abuse this drug. It is never a good idea to mix alcohol with any medicine. There are other people who may have insomnia but it is caused by depression. What they need is anti-depressants and not sleep medicine. Without professional help, these people may become depressed and use the insomnia drugs to end their life.</p>

<p>There are a few different causes for insomnia in teenagers. One of the most common causes for insomnia in teenagers is because these teenagers have a tendency of staying up very late at night and yet they have to get up really early in the morning to go to school on the weekdays. Then, when there is no school on the weekends and holidays, these teenagers stay in bed, asleep, trying to make up for the sleep that they have lost throughout their school days.</p>
<p>Whenever a teenager has this type of a sleep pattern, they are simply causing themselves to have jet lag each and every weekend. It will then take them at least 2 weeks, if not longer, to readjust their sleep cycle. Therefore, this type of sleep pattern that teenagers have only serves to perpetuate the problem that they have with insomnia. So, their body is never capable of adjusting itself to the continuous changes in these teenagers sleep patterns.</p>
<p>Of course, there are also a lot of teenagers who are struggling with depression and anxiety. Let&#039;s face it, adolescence is not an easy time in life. Many teenagers become depressed or anxious because of the various stress factors in their lives. This in turn can also lead to insomnia in teenagers.</p>
<p>There are also the other reasons for insomnia that most adults suffer from. Teenagers are also able to suffer from these causes as well. One of these reasons is that they have inherited a delayed circadian clock. In other words, whenever the clock on the wall says that it is 10 P.M., their bodies are telling them that it is only 8 P.M.</p>
<p>What To Do About Insomnia In Teenagers</p>
<p>Teenagers require a regular bedtime routine, in just the same way that children do. This is just a matter of proper sleep hygiene. However, there does come a time when you may wish to seek medical advice for your teenager. You will know that it is time to do so because insomnia has been interfering with your teenager&#039;s ability to function in the daytime for a month or longer. Your doctor can then diagnose and treat this problem.</p>

<p>Primary insomnia is the experiencing of sleeplessness that is not due to any other factor. In other words, it is its own condition and is not triggered by any other events. Examples of medical conditions that can cause primary insomnia include major stressful events that are lengthy in duration.</p>
<p>Treatment Facts About Insomnia</p>
<p>In the event that the insomniac is experiencing secondary insomnia, the treating of this condition, can for the most part, be treated by removing the source of the insomnia. For example if the insomniac is a heavy coffee drinker then the reduction of their intake in coffee may be what is needed to treat the condition.</p>
<p>However, in the cases of primary insomnia, this condition may be caused by serious illnesses or emotional issues that the sufferer is experiencing. Therefore, a strict dietary, physical and emotional regimen may need to be followed.</p>
<p>If this plan of action is unsuccessful, the use of prescription medication may be indicated. Such treatment could include the use of sleep inducing drugs such as those found in the benzodiazepine family. These medicines could include Xanax, Valium, Serax, etc.</p>

<p>While most people may suffer from insomnia occasionally, those that cannot sleep on a regular basis may be suffering from chronic insomnia and may need medical intervention to get their system back in order. There may also be underlying reasons that a person cannot sleep and finding an insomnia cure will require taking care of those problems in order for them to be able to sleep.</p>
<p>Sometimes, an insomnia cure is simple such as stop drinking caffeine or alcohol at least an hour before going to bed, or not taking a long nap in the afternoon. A person&#039;s sleep cycle can also be disrupted when they travel through different time zones and while the body may know it is time to go to sleep, the mind still sees the sun shining as well as the clock on the wall and insists it is the middle of the day.</p>
<p>Insomnia Cure May Require Talking Turkey</p>
<p>Many people find a nap following Thanksgiving dinner difficult to do without. Mainly due to the ingestion of turkey, which contains a high level of tryptophan, which is a natural sedative and can be an insomnia cure. It has been found that tryptophan is also present in warm milk, and explains mom&#039;s use of warm milk as a sleep aid for her children. Adding honey to the milk can speed the tryptophan into the system quicker, as well as making the milk sweeter.</p>
<p>Some believe that alcohol has sleep-inducing properties and works as an insomnia cure, however it has been shown that while sleep my be possible, it is usually a restless sleep and not long-lasting. Waking up in the middle of the night is not uncommon with alcohol-induced sleep and hangovers are a distinct possibility, causing sleepiness throughout most of the next day.</p>
<p>While there are sleep aids on the market to help people fall asleep fast and reportedly stay asleep longer, they are not really used as an insomnia cure. Rather they are providing temporary relief to cover up a sleeping problem, which will need to be addressed before the insomnia is cured.</p>

<p>The causes of insomnia have been identified as everything from physical, mental and medical and determining the cause helps identify insomnia treatments that may be beneficial to the person who cannot sleep. Whether suffering from transient or acute insomnia, those with the sleep disorder are in need of proper insomnia treatments.</p>
<p>Transient insomnia, defined as the inability to sleep for a day or so, is typically caused by stress or anxiety as well as possible physical pain. For these people insomnia treatments include eliminating stress and dulling the pain that is keeping their mind focused on something other than falling asleep. In some folks, a system of preparing for bed is needed to clear their minds before attempting sleep. Getting ready for bed is usually more involved than pulling down the sheets and without proper preparation, sleep will be denied.</p>
<p>Medical Intervention May Provide Temporary Relief</p>

This and short-term anxiety can cause transient insomnia which can last from one night to a few weeks. Acute insomnia can last from a few weeks to six months.</p>
<p>The most serious is acute insomnia, which can cause the loss of sleep every night for at least a month. Medical professionals will attempt to determine the cause for the lack of sleep and cure the underlying cause. <p>In very rare cases, a hereditary illness called fatal familial insomnia will cause a person to totally be unable to sleep, usually resulting in death within about two years following onset of the problem. There is no known cure for this ailment, which can easily be passed to subsequent generations.</p>

Fighting an experience could include addressing the situation by keeping the &#034;bad&#034; experience in perspective, seeking help, or maintaining a positive perspective on the situation. Choosing to take flight could include internalizing the situation or seeking a method that provides escape. One such method of escape can be the choice of utilizing pain relieving drugs.</p>
<p>An illicit drug that an individual can turn to in order to deaden the pain, escape the situation, or just to simply cope with life is heroin. Heroin is a highly effective opiate and painkiller that will serve this purpose. Unfortunately, in addition to being illegal, heroin is highly addictive.</p>
<p>For those individuals who wish to be free of heroin there is a treatment program that utilizes a synthetic opiate. This synthetic opiate is called methadone. In order to understand the methadone process of heroin treatment it is important to understand what methadone is, the related side effects and specifically the condition of methadone withdrawal insomnia.</p>
<p>What Is Methadone?</p>
<p>Methadone is a synthetically created opiate that has been sanctioned by governments to medically treat the heroin and morphine addict. The medical use of methadone provides the same feelings of euphoria and release from pain that is gained from the use of heroin or morphine.</p>
<p>The treatment strategy behind the substitution of methadone for heroin and morphine addictions serves two purposes. The first purpose is to minimize or prevent the illegal purchase of heroin. The second purpose is to provide the addict with the needed opiate, but control and release the addict from dependency through the controlled use of the substance.</p>

<p>Methadone withdrawal insomnia takes place as the recovering addict begins to have fewer opiates in their system. With less opiates in the system, the dream process begins to normalize. Methadone withdrawal insomnia then becomes a reality as the patient&#039;s dreams are often nightmarish or too realistic in their portrayal. This in turn causes the condition known as methadone withdrawal insomnia.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A form of an inherited gene disorder called fatal familial insomnia is a rare ailment, affecting fewer than 50 families around the world, but is untreatable and almost always fatal. If one parent has the gene, there is a 50 percent chance it will be handed down to their children. Once the illness begins to present itself, in seven to 18 months the patient will completely lose the ability to sleep and death results.</p>
<p>The gene causes mutation of a protein, which causes plaque to form in the thalamus, the portion of the brain that controls sleep. This stage of  fatal familial insomnia initially results in insomnia and for about four months of this progression, can cause panic attacks and unfounded fears of just about everything. For another five months, the panic attacks will become more pronounced and hallucinations may also result from the lack of sleep.</p>
<p>The third stage of fatal familial insomnia lasts about three months and causes the patient to completely lose the inability to sleep and is typically accompanied by rapid weight loss. The final stage usually results in dementia and the patient may become mute during the final six months of the disease progression. This is the final stage that usually results in death. There is no known cure or treatment regiment for fatal familial insomnia.</p>
<p>Finding Relationship To Other Brain Disorders</p>
<p>As research continues, relationships with other gene disorders such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or Mad Cow Disease, and also chronic wasting disease found in deer and elk. These prion diseases may be related at the gene level as well as kuru, known as the laughing disease that causes sudden outbursts of laughter for no apparent reason.</p>
<p>The ailment has presented itself at various ages, ranging from 30 to 60 years of age, with an average of about 50 and death usually occurs within seven to 36 months of the onset. The form of fatal familial insomnia in humans is not contagious but the onset will vary from patient to patient, even with siblings from the same family. Gene therapy is still being researched but so far has not proven successful in fighting the ailment.</p>
<p>While studies of fatal familial insomnia continue, it is believed the lack of the ability to sleep is the underlying cause of the panic attacks and hallucinations, it is the formation of plaque in the brain that shuts down the person&#039;s ability to sleep.</p>

<p>While there are a lot of different reasons that people suffer from insomnia, some of the most common causes of insomnia include:</p>
<p>Sometimes you may be extremely sleepy at certain times of the day while experiencing insomnia at other times of the day. Common causes of insomnia in this case include jet lag, traveling through various time zones, doing shift work wherein you always have to work at different times and the changing of time that happens in the Spring and the Fall.</p>
<p>You may also suffer insomnia due to the fact that you are unable to sleep through either anxiety or physical pain.</p>
<p>Other causes of insomnia that are quite common include having extremely bad nightmares, sleepwalking, performing violent behavior while sleeping, or moving your body in response to your dreams.</p>
<p>Some people awaken during the night because they have acid flowing upward into the throat while they are asleep.</p>
<p>Patients who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder may have difficulty falling asleep during their manic episodes.</p>
<p>If you drink too much caffeine, intake too much nicotine, take certain types of medicines or eat too much sugar too close to bedtime you may also suffer from insomnia. These things side effects will cause you to be irritable, have aches, headaches or even be hyperactive. All of these things are not conducive to a good night&#039;s sleep. So, instead of reaching for these things, try drinking 1 or 2 cups of water an hour or 2 before bed.</p>
<p>When a person does not get enough exercise 4 or 5 hours before bedtime, are overweight or have high blood glucose levels are some of the other causes of insomnia.</p>
<p>As people get older, insomnia becomes more common. While older people still need the same amount of sleep that they have always needed, it becomes more difficult to sleep for long periods of time. So, they toss and turn in bed all night. Sometimes they will also fall out of bed and thus get hurt at night.</p>
<p>Whenever you are under a lot of stress or emotional upheaval insomnia will become much more common.</p>
<p>Some of the other things that cause insomnia include dietary allergies, poor sleep hygiene,  hyper-thyroidism and depression. This is because these ailments have a stimulating effect.</p>

<p>A person who has troubles falling asleep or staying asleep one time does not have sleep insomnia. Insomnia is a condition where sleep problems are reoccurring. A person with insomnia will always feel like they are not getting enough sleep.</p>
<p>Insomnia is not simply about being able to sleep, but rather about how a person feels upon waking. Normally a person should feel well rested and ready to tackle the day. A person with insomnia, however, will still feel tired, not as alert and possible run down.</p>
<p>What Causes Insomnia</p>
<p>There are many causes of insomnia. Sleep insomnia can be a naturally effect of aging, associated with depression, a side effect of medication or caused by stress. Insomnia is not caused by drinking too much caffeine nor is it a result of not allowing yourself to get enough sleep.</p>

<p>Some behaviors can trigger insomnia, as the mentioned drinking of too much caffeine, for example. Caffeine is a stimulant and therefore blocks the body&#039;s ability to make a person tired. If a person naps throughout the day, they may have problems sleeping at night. Behaviors like these bring about self-induced sleep insomnia and are easy to avoid.</p>
<p>Who Is Most At Risk For Sleep Insomnia</p>
<p>Insomnia is often associated with age. The hormone our bodies produce that induces sleep slows production as we age which in turn can cause insomnia. In addition, females tend to be more prone to insomnia. This is also due to hormonal reasons. People who are depressed or on medications are also more prone to insomnia.</p>
<p>People with sleep insomnia are often treated with medications. If an underlying condition is found that it is causing the insomnia then that will be treated. Behavior changes and therapy may also be used to help insomnia patients. Insomnia is highly treatable, whatever the case, though. It is not necessary to suffer through the effects of insomnia.</p>

<p>Melatonin is produced by the penal gland as part of the bodies natural cycle. The body responds to darkness or night by producing melatonin so we get tired and go to sleep. The body needs sleep to keep it functioning properly.</p>
<p>The Problem With Insomnia</p>
<p>When a person is not producing enough melatonin and suffering from insomnia as a result, they are putting their body at risk for more serious problems. Sleep helps us to rejuvenate our body and mind. It keeps us alert and focused throughout the day. When we do not get enough sleep we are clumsy, tried and worn down during the day. It slows reaction time and can cause a person to have accidents.</p>
<p>When a person is suffering from insomnia their body&#039;s immune system is also not as strong. Sleep is important to building a good immune system. Therefore, a person with insomnia may be sick more.</p>
<p>How Melatonin Is Used To Treat Insomnia</p>
<p>Melatonin is produced less as we age. That is why insomnia is common in older adults. The reduction of melatonin can be supplemented by a person taking the insomnia hormone in pill form. By boosting the body&#039;s levels of melatonin, a person can then overcome the insomnia because the body is responding naturally again to the cues form the hormone to induce sleep.</p>
<p>Melatonin is not a cure-all for insomnia, though. In some patients, it is not a problem with melatonin that is causing their insomnia. If there is another under lying problem then melatonin supplements might not help at all.</p>
<p>The insomnia hormone melatonin is very important. A person with low melatonin production will not only have problems sleeping, but may also start to get sick more often, may have accidents and will likely have problems functioning during the day. That is why keeping melatonin levels in the body at a steady level is important and why science and the medical community have worked to make this insomnia hormone synthetically.</p>

<p>A few exacerbating conditions that can trigger episodes of insomnia can include a change in a person&#039;s schedule, their diet, stress, anxiety, etc. Not only does this condition of insomnia affect adults, but can also affect children as well.</p>
<p>A variety of sleeplessness amongst the young is known as sleep-onset insomnia in children. When endeavoring to understand sleep-onset insomnia in children it is important to know what this type of insomnia is and to review a few recommendations that will allow children to gain their proper sleep.</p>
<p>What Is Sleep-Onset Insomnia In Children</p>
<p>Sleep-onset insomnia in children can be defined as a condition in which the required major sleep segment of a child&#039;s day is delayed using the normal sleep time for a child as a reference. This sleep-onset insomnia in children generally results in the difficulty of awakening the child at the desired time the following day.</p>
<p>Often this type of insomnia is not typically caused by any factors that prevent the child from falling asleep. Sleep-onset insomnia in children is a habit that has been formed by the child and reinforced by the family by not providing a structured sleeping schedule for the child.</p>
<p>Recommendations To Ensure Your Child&#039;s Rest</p>
<p>To ensure the health of the child it is important that proper sleeping habits are formed. Therefore, to make sure that sleep-onset insomnia in children does not occur there are some simple steps or recommendations that families can take.</p>
<p>Some of those recommendations can include a strict adherence to a set bedtime for the child. It is important that both the child and the parents are disciplined to ensure that this schedule is adhered to.</p>
<p>Also, to prevent sleep-onset insomnia in children it is highly recommended that activity following the evening meal should be limited to low energy activities. Another activity that may help the child to become drowsy is to enter into a specific routine. This routine can include the taking of a warm bath and the reading of a calming bedtime story.</p>
<p>Another suggestion to help prevent sleep-onset insomnia in children is to avoid large meals prior to their bedtime. Also, it is important not to give the child any caffeine prior to bedtime. In fact, it is recommended that caffeine products not be given to children six hours prior to bedtime.</p>

<p>However, there is an extremely dangerous and aggressive type of insomnia that not only robs the sufferer of their sleep, but eventually proves to be fatal. This type of insomnia is known as sporadic fatal insomnia.</p>
<p>To understand the topic of insomnia completely, it is important to fully explore all insomniac conditions. Therefore, understanding what sporadic fatal insomnia is and how this disease manifests itself in the human body is important knowledge to gain in understanding the condition of insomnia.</p>
<p>What Is Sporadic Fatal Insomnia?</p>
<p>Sporadic fatal insomnia is a type of insomnia that is not caused by stress, diet, changes in lifestyle, medications, etc. This type of insomnia is caused by a protein in the body called a prion. The prion somehow becomes malformed and affects one specific area of the brain. The area of the brain that is affected is the thalamus and the function of the thalamus is that portion of the brain that influences an individual&#039;s sleep.</p>
<p>The similarity between sporadic fatal insomnia and mad cow disease are physiologically connected as both conditions are caused by the same deformed protein.</p>
<p>The Nightmare Of Sporadic Fatal Insomnia</p>
<p>The nightmare of sporadic fatal insomnia is demonstrated as the condition progresses in severity. Sporadic fatal insomnia is an extremely rare and aggressive disease that exhibits its early stages in individuals who are between the ages of 40 and 60 years of age. In addition, this disease seems to limit itself within specific families indicating a strong correlation that it is genetically transferred.</p>
<p>Those who have this disease begin with occasional problems involving the movement of their muscles as well as some negligible challenges in obtaining sleep. However, as the disease worsens the individual loses their ability to gain any sleep at all. This inability to sleep is real and the diagnosed individual is fortunate to obtain one hour of sleep each night.</p>
<p>Other symptoms include involuntary muscle movements, elevated pulse and dementia. In addition, the individual loses control of their tear ducts which results in the person shedding uncontrolled tears.</p>
<p>The next stage of the disease robs the individual of their short-term memory which ultimately results in the patient being unable to ascertain what thoughts are real and what thoughts are unreal. Finally, the individual with sporadic fatal insomnia becomes completely deluded. All diagnosed cases of sporadic fatal insomnia have resulted in the individual&#039;s fatality within the time frame of one to three years.</p>
<p>Fortunately, there are very few diagnosed cases of sporadic fatal insomnia. In fact, there have been only 24 families that have been determined to be at risk for sporadic fatal insomnia.</p>
<p>However, there is speculation that some cases of dementia have been misdiagnosed which may suggest that there have been unreported cases of sporadic fatal insomnia. Additionally, at this time, there is no known cure for sporadic fatal insomnia.</p>
