If you broke up with your boyfriend 5 years ago and you just changed your sheets, don't start blaming the 5 cups of coffee you had today. A visit to your doctor may tell you that you are approaching menopause. Well, the news probably made you nervous and had you finish more cups of coffee but it does not mean that menopause and insomnia happen at exactly the same time. Studies revealed that the difficulty in sleeping may happen from five to seven years before the actual menopause occurs.

Summary: The link between menopause and insomnia and how to deal with it.

Sleep can be too difficult to achieve at some point in a woman's life. It could be because you broke up with your boyfriend, or the bedbugs are making it impossible for you to travel to dreamland.

Menopause and insomnia are as inevitable as rainbow after a storm. Like Romeo and Juliet, one isn't exactly complete without the other. People have been putting the blame on night sweats as responsible for making sleep so unattainable during menopause. However, scientific studies revealed that insomnia may not at all times caused by night sweats. Menopause and insomnia is a cause and effect thing. A drop in estrogen hormone level decreases the serotonin chemical in the brain, making sleep so hard to achieve.

The lack of sleep can result to some other behavioral problems like moodiness and irritability. There are some techniques you can try doing in order to stimulate sleep. These are:

* Keep your room free from noise.
* Use soft light to illuminate your room and turn off any glaring lights.
* Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine.
* Keep your room cool.

Those who have long term sleeping problems may require more than a lullaby. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is also said to reduce sleeping problems and other menopausal symptoms. However, HRT use should be advised by a doctor because of its alleged risks. There are other natural alternatives that are said to "cure" sleeping problems. But their efficiencies are much of a debate up to this day. Keeping a regular sleep schedule may help you deal with menopause and insomnia. A healthy lifestyle like eating the right foods especially before bedtime and engaging in physical activities everyday may not only keep you healthy but may make your menopause and insomnia dilemma seem like a bad dream. Mind relaxation exercises like meditation and yoga can also encourage sleep. However, if you still find yourself fully awake after all these efforts, stop trying. Try not to think about sleeping and do something worthwhile like cleaning the house and doing a report. Whatever that keeps your mind off sleeping. And counting sheep is not an option.

Summary: Discussing the many controversies surrounding the menopause hormones.

The occurrence of menopause is already as complicated as it is and dealing with contrasting issues on menopause hormones is something that we can certainly do away with.

Some women go through menopause with more difficulty than others. Menopausal symptoms mostly bring discomfort which make menopause harder to live with. However, there are also women who do not feel any changes and the end of their menstrual periods is the only thing that tells them menopause has come.

If menopause brings intense discomfort, consulting a health care provider is the best step to take. He may prescribe menopause hormones to alleviate the symptoms. Do not self-medicate. Even if your friend said that her menopause hormones are safe and effective, it is still possible that it won't work well for you. Plus there are menopause hormones that should not be taken by those who have other health conditions.

A number of fortunate women are not bothered by any menopausal symptoms. They are those who breeze through menopause with more ease than learning to ride the bike. While it is still advisable to see your doctor regarding health risks linked with menopause and aging, menopause hormones are not required. There are doctors who would still advise their patients to have menopause hormones medications but the risks that are associated with these are far greater than their benefits.

Several arguments have sprung up regarding the use of menopause hormones. What makes it more complicated is the ongoing war between the traditional menopause hormones and the "compounded" menopause hormones. These "compounded" hormones are also called bio identical hormones since they are derived from plant estrogens which act like the body's estrogens.

Commercial menopause hormones manufacturers have questioned the safety and efficiency claims of these alleged natural menopause hormones. These natural alternatives have become the more popular choice of women because they feel that these are safer than the traditional ones. Moreover, the commercial menopause hormones have been in question because of studies that found evidences linking then to several health risks.

Women have been finding more solace in the compounding menopause hormones. These plant-based medications have been given more attention by those seeking relief from menopausal symptoms. Since more and more people have turned to these alternative remedies, giant commercial hormones manufacturers have questioned the safety of the natural drugs. They say that people have been using medications that are not sufficiently tested, unlike the traditional medications that are properly regulated.

Choosing the right medication would require more than a gut feel. Trusting your female intuition is not an enough basis to guide you to the right choice. Your doctor will know which one will work best for you.

Summary: The many facts behind early menopause and premature menopause.

Just because you're still in your early twenties does not necessarily mean that you still have more than two decades before you can come face to face with menopause and all its alleged complexities. Menopause has always been associated with women who have thinning gray hair, facial wrinkles, and a large number on their birthday cakes. But shockingly, menopause can come right after high school graduation. Reality bites.

Early menopause and premature menopause happen in about 1% of women between the ages of 15-45. While these two seem the same, these are actually two different things. It is considered as an early menopause if it happens before a woman turns 45 years old. However, if menopause happens before a woman is 40 years old, then it is called premature menopause.

While there are a number of apparent reasons which causes early menopause and premature menopause in women, doctors are unable to explain why some younger women are experiencing early menopause or premature menopause. The most evident causes though are:

Premature Ovarian Failure (POV)

This is the naturally-occurring premature menopause. This means that a woman's ovaries fail to function properly. The ovaries may have stopped producing eggs or the hormones needed for ovulation. POV is caused by several factors. Sixty-five percent of POV cases are due to autoimmune disorders. This is characterized when the body produces antibodies for its own products. Another factor is genetics. A small percentage of women have the tendency to start menopause early like their mothers. Some women though are just born with fewer eggs than the body requires, resulting in early menopause.

Surgical Menopause

Health reasons may require women to undergo surgery which would result in early menopause. This type is a conscious decision by women to have menopause earlier than they are supposed to have it because it is the best option with regards to their health. One such surgery is hysterectomy or the removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes and sometimes the ovaries.

Menopause Due To Chemotherapy

Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation can actually result in early menopause. While these treatments are aimed at destroying cancer cells, healthy cells, particularly the ovarian cells, are also destroyed during these processes. Some cancer patients who have gone through these treatments have temporary menopause, while others menopause permanently.
Menopause Due To Infection

Menopause, although very rarely, can actually be caused by infections associated with tuberculosis and mumps. These infections sometimes infect the ovaries which can result in an early menopause.

Early menopause can happen to a woman years before it should. However, this does not mean that she is any sicker than the woman who had her menopause at 50. What is important are the changes that you are willing to accept and practice in order to have a healthy life after menopause.

Summary: Trashing menopausal hearsays and explaining the real facts.

Menopause is as scary enough to think about for some women as it is to deal with which beliefs are facts and which are just neighborhood chitchats. There are a lot of issues surrounding menopause. Even if scientific evidences have disproved most of these claims, people are still hanging on to them as if these would one day become true. Some of the interesting misconceptions are:

Women are not interested in sex when they experience menopause.

This is by far the most believed myth of all time. Experts can not find any link between estrogen levels and sex drive. They say that while it is true that the sexual aspect of a person changes with age, it only gets better for women. A good basis for predicting a woman's sex drive during menopause is to assess her sex drive before she had menopause. So a woman who has always been a good sexual partner will not likely turn out to be a bad one after menopause.

Menopause can make you gain weight.

This myth is so much like saying that seeing a black cat brings bad luck. Poor cat! There has been no proofs to this claim. Women experience varying symptoms during menopause, and like weight issues, there is no general rule for it. Some women may gain weight, some may lose weight, and some others simply do not have any weight changes.

Menopause may make women go insane and lose their memory.

If you consider her menopausal mood swings as insanity, then by all means, hang on to this myth. Anyway, everyone's brain shrinks considerably by the age 30. Although this does not exactly mean we all go insane by then, this doesn't exempt the guys from the cognitive decline either.

Menopause symptoms lasts forever.

Menopause is a forever thing. But its symptoms does not end along with the actual menopause. The length of time that a woman experience the symptoms is as varied as the types of symptoms each one may have. Some claim to experience the symptoms in as little as a few months although experts say that symptoms can stay from six to thirteen years.

Accepting menopause is like living with the fact that all women go through menstruation. Dealing with PMS and other discomforts may not have been easy but it is comforting to know that this does not happen to a select few. What you may be experiencing is being experienced by million others all over the world. Menopause may be harder to deal with because unlike menstruation which signals puberty, it signals aging. But all women go through this as well. So lighten up and age with grace!

Summary: The basics of the first stage of menopause — perimenopause.

Did you know that there are actually three stages of menopause? The fist stage which is the topic of discussion, is known as perimenopause. This is the stage when the menopausal symptoms are felt, usually a few years before the actual menopause. Some experts believe that perimenopause can last from 5-15 years while others say that it is a 3-4 year phase. However, most women experience menopausal symptoms during perimenopause than during the actual menopause or after it. A woman still has her menstrual periods during the perimenopause stage, although these are very erratic and she may find herself skipping some periods as a result of fluctuating hormonal levels. This phase usually happens to a woman between the ages of 35 and 50. Although menopausal symptoms vary in every woman, she may begin to feel some changes, either physically or emotionally, during the perimenopause stage. Some symptoms may be felt gradually over a longer period of time, while others may notice abrupt changes in a shorter span of time.

A perimenopausal woman may also start having PMS if she hasn't had these or her PMS may become more intense. Menopausal symptoms most commonly felt during this phase are hot flushes, mood swings, urinary incontinence, and sleep disorders.

Some health practitioners suggest using hormonal therapy during the perimenopause stage to replace the decreasing supply of hormones. Since there are women who do not know that they have gone through perimenopausal, and they just suddenly realized that their menstruation have stopped, only a few are able to address the problems that come with it. There are also women who have noticed intense menopause symptoms during the perimenopause stage, but have never asked for medical advice. Some of these symptoms, if not treated, can lead to surgical procedures. These surgical procedures, among other things, are responsible for premature menopause.

Women should pay more attention to what their bodies say especially if they fall between the menopause age range. Bone loss is a likely possibility during these years. Estrogen slows down bone breakdown. So a low level of estrogen during menopause is likely to lead to osteoporosis unless you act fast. Although bone loss also happens in men, women have the tendency to accelerate bone loss more than men do. The perimenopause phase is when bone density starts decreasing without women knowing it.

Looking at perimenopause like it's a welcome party for something like cancer, will not make the situation any easier to deal with. To successfully live with perimenopause and its symptoms would mean seeing your doctor about making lifestyle modifications and considering hormonal therapy, so a healthier life will await you during your menopause years.

Summary: The truths and the half truths on male menopause.

Before you laugh your head off when you think about your partner experiencing the symptoms women have during menopause, think again. Males can actually experience those. While your partner may brush off his mood swings and decreasing sex drive as the result of too much pressure from work, he may actually be having the male menopause symptoms.

Male menopause has been debated on as being a fact or plain fiction. However, research has proved that males do experience their own version of menopause. While male menopause does not exhibit a noticeable sign, like the end of menstruation period for the female, male menopause is caused by a drop in hormonal levels as well. Low estrogen levels causes females to menopause while a low testosterone level results to male menopause termed as andropause. Some men are in constant denial up to now about the existence of a male menopause. And they have been waving their "ageless male" banners for everyone to read. Men NEVER accept the fact that their sex drives are not as virile when they are in their 40's than when they were in their 20's. They insist on being sex gods all the way to their graves.

Male menopause is not just the scheme of some feminists to deflate men's ego. There is scientific evidence proving its existence. Some men would rather call this as "mid-life crisis" although this is said to be something else as well. Middle-age crisis is simply a psycho-social issue. It does not necessarily happen to every male and does not at all times influence his sexual life. Male menopause on the other hand is a natural physiological occurrence that greatly affects the sexual drive around the age of 40. Studies also revealed that the male gradually decreases testosterone hormone production around that time. So when a man is around 80, his hormone level is that of pre-puberty level. While men can continue to father children during and long after their menopause, a significant decrease in their testosterone level will affect their sexual capacity.

Male menopause symptoms are somewhat similar to those experienced by women during menopause. However, male menopause symptoms are generally more sexually-related, some of which are: decrease sex drive; decrease in strength and endurance; and less strong erections. Symptoms common to both male and female menopause are the behavior problems and sleep disorders.

The next time you see an eighty-year old male dating a twenty-year old babe, don't be too harsh in thinking that they are fooling themselves. There may be more to the relationship than sex. And let men wave their banners of "ageless male" for all eternity. After all, they need to keep telling themselves that.

Summary: The underlying cause of swollen ankles during menopause.

Swollen ankles are a common site for women during menopause. But like any other menopausal symptoms, swollen ankles do not occur in every woman during menopause. There are a number of reasons for swollen ankles like: standing or sitting down too long, menstrual periods, pregnancy, too much weight, aging, injury to ankles or feet.

Swollen ankles are also an indication of diseases such as heart, kidney, and liver failure. These conditions are as a result of too much fluid on the body.

There are other health factors that cause swollen ankles aside from menopause. Blood clot, leg infection, varicose veins, burns, insect bites, malnutrition, and surgery to the legs or feet. Swollen ankles that are common during menopause are not only brought about by other diseases but also by medications and treatments. Menopause symptoms remedy like the Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and estrogen in birth control pills are also likely to cause swollen ankles. There are also certain drugs for lowering blood pressure that can result in swollen ankles when taken in. Steroids and antidepressant drugs may also result in swollen ankles.

There are no clear explanations as to why swollen ankles happen during menopause. It has been evident though that most cases are due to too much bodily fluids. The treatment of symptoms of menopause may have greatly influenced the occurrence of swollen ankles though. It is also a very common fact that painless swollen ankles and feet happen and is a common dilemma among older people. Some suffer intense swelling that may even include the calves and thighs. However, the swelling of ankles and feet are most common due to the presence of gravity.

Estrogen and progestin hormones are said to have a great impact on the body's water metabolism. Fluctuating hormone levels during the menopausal years can actually cause fluid retention, which is an effect of an increase in sodium. As with pregnancy, weight gain during menopause results in swollen ankles.

Reducing one's sodium intake may help lessen the event of fluid retention in the body. While swollen ankles, along with other menopause symptoms are unpredictable, eating a proper diet along with living a healthy lifestyle may prevent you from experiencing most of the symptoms associated with menopause including swollen ankles.

Other remedies that you might find helpful in fighting the incidence of swollen ankles during menopause are: elevating your legs to a point above your heart when lying down, exercising your legs to pump fluid from the legs to the heart, and wearing support sock and stockings.

If your swollen ankles have gone really bad or if accompanied by other disturbing symptoms like fever, or if the swelling is red and has included your abdomen, consult your health care provider right away. This may be more than a problem of shoe size.

Summary: The most popular herbs for menopause symptoms treatment.

Been having doubts about using the hormone replacement therapy? Are you looking for the natural ways of relieving yourself from all the menopausal symptoms?

Due to the increasing debates on the dangerous side effects of the hormone replacement therapy, more and more women have been seeking for natural alternatives for HRT. Different herbs for menopause symptoms relief have sprung up from different parts of the globe. Extensive studies have found out that soy is by far the most widely know natural remedy for menopausal symptoms. However, there are numerous herbs for menopause treatment available today. Some of these are:

Black Cohosh

This is traditionally called the menopause herb which acts on the uterus to lessen the incidences of cramping, muscle pains, hot flashes, memory loss, and mood swings. It is also said to decrease blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Chaste Tree and Chasteberry

These are commonly known as the herbs for menopause hormonal smoothening. These are said to balance the hormones and reduce the risks of depression during menopause.

Damiana

This is used mainly as an antidepressant and as a remedy for some sexual problems. This is not advisable to be taken in too often as this can harm the urinary tract lining.

Sage

This particular herb has many other medicinal properties aside from being an effective treatment for menopausal hot flashes and night sweats.

Dong Quai

This herb is popular in Chinese tradition to give relief to women with painful menstruation and other abdominal pains. It is also used as an effective treatment of anemia and as an aid in the remedy of menopausal symptoms.

Red Clover

This herb is considered as the "cure-all" for menopause symptoms since it is a major source of plant estrogens called phytoestrogens. These plant estrogens act like the female sex hormone in the body and help increase the estrogen levels as well.
Wild Yam

This herb is said to be able to give relief to women suffering from menopausal arthritis. This is found out to possess anti-inflammatory properties and is effective in reducing menstrual bleeding as well.

Maca Root

This herb is continually used for its sexual benefits. Maca root also contains several vitamins and minerals. It is said to encourage hormone production and is an excellent way to reduce the menopausal symptoms.

Women should carefully assess if their need for treatment is necessary. While herbs for menopause symptoms are said to be safe, people should look beyond what is written on the labels. What is labeled "natural" may not actually be safe. Finally, make sure that you know what remedy is best for you by consulting a health care professional. Otherwise, your self-medication may prove to be useless or even fatal.

Summary: Unveiling the things that you need to know, which your doctor failed to inform you, about premenopause.

Menopause elicits different reactions from women, younger ones included. Some would flinch, some will probably just shrug, and others might stick their tongues out at you and say, "not in another 10 years". But can we really control when menopause should come? While most women have their menopause between 45 to 55 years old, about 1% will experience it before they turn 40. This type of menopause is called premature menopause or premenopause.

Premenopause is mostly due to surgical procedures done when there is evidence of ovarian failure. However, there are other causes such as genetics, and cancer treatments like chemotherapy. Premenopause can happen to women as young as 15 years old. This means that those who experience menopause early on in their lives will find menopause very depressing and life-changing. Some would have to seek help in order to deal with the infertility issues. Aside from its possible psychological effects, premenopause also causes women to have a long period of postmenopause. This means that you may be required by your doctor to have hormonal replacement therapy (HRT).

Experts have not really made any firm comparison on perimenopause and premenopause. Some say that both mean the same thing. A few made some very vague descriptions on these two terms. They say that premenopause means the few years just before the actual menopause, while perimenopause literally means "around or surrounding menopause". These descriptions are somewhat unclear especially for the latter term. If we think about its literal meaning, perimenopause would also encompass some parts of premenopause, actual menopause, and postmenopause. To shed more light on this, some experts stated that perimenopause may let us focus our attention to the changes that are happening on around the time of the actual menopause or the end of the menstrual cycle.

Women who are not fully educated about menopause may think that it comes naturally to all females around the time when their hairs turn gray, or when making quilts seem like a better idea than shopping. Unfortunately, the truth is lifestyle choices made years before menopause can actually hasten it and influence menopausal problems. Healthy eating patterns and recreations can make your premenopause much more tolerable than you think. Getting rid of vices, exercising, adequate sleep and relaxation should all be part of the lifestyle for a "better" menopause experience.

While most women think that premenopause means saying goodbye to youth and beauty, others believe that it actually is a start of another level of radiance. Menopause in general should not be viewed as an end to something good, but should be accepted as a start of another great phase in life.

Summary: Providing the facts surrounding the issue on sex after menopause.

Women fidget when it's being talked about. They whisper and look around as if their whole life depended on it. Women think it's the biggest secret next to the existence of biological warfare. But is it really?

As most female fear, menopause does not signal the end to a happy sexual life. This misconception has led many people to believe that sex after menopause is nonexistent. This fear may have been a result of stereotyping older women as plain and boring. Moreover, the fact that menopausal women will no longer be able to bear children has been linked with the loss of sexual urges.

Experts say that sex drive should not lessen as people get older. In fact studies have found out that sexuality is an important factor in increasing the quality of our lives. Sex after menopause, as with passion and romance, can actually be more enticing when you are 50.

Several women may have bid goodbye to their interest in sex the same time they did to their menstruation periods. Their reasons vary. Some feel that sex after menopause is more painful and less fulfilling. Others are simply reluctant thinking that menopause accompanied by their weight gain may have made them undesirable to their partners. And a few simply lost the desire.

However, a greater percentage of women said that they did not feel any decrease in activities related to sex after menopause. Fact is, fulfilling sexual life does not disappear with time. The women who find sex after menopause more enjoyable said that they need not worry about contraceptives and unwanted pregnancies anymore, making them perform better in bed.

For those who may have problems with sex after menopause though, there are numerous ways to deal with them. Lubricating gels, vaginal moisturizers, and even vaginal estrogen creams can make sex after menopause as satisfying as it was during your child-bearing years. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is also said to relieve vaginal dryness. However, since there have been negative effects associated with the use of HRT, it is best to consult your doctor before attempting to use it.

Female who are experiencing menopause may complain of several changes including a low desire for sex. While this is not true for all, and not a clear explanation has been derived at, experts believe that this is mostly a psychological-related issue. Women's attitude towards menopause may have a big impact on their sexuality. Accepting menopause as a natural phase that brings exciting challenges to a woman's life may not require you to see a sex therapist but will prove to you that indeed, there can be wonderful sex after menopause.

Summary: Menopause support groups can help one cope with menopause and its complexities much easier.

Did you have the urge to lock yourself up in your room when the doctor said you are going through perimenopause? Do you constantly find yourself sweating at night and unable to sleep well? Do you have something really serious or is it really just menopause?

Every woman will go through menopause at some point in their lives. While some may have it around the ages 45-55, menopause can occur as early as when a woman is 15 years old. Regardless of what age menopause knocks on one's door, it is something that woman has some difficulty in dealing with. This does not mean that menopause is unpleasant or that it always brings along some terrible consequences. Menopause, like puberty, is a natural phenomenon in a woman's existence. For years, menopause has been associated with the end of youth and attractiveness. It has been viewed as the sign to the end of sexual life. Moreover, menopause has always been seen as the start of age-related diseases and their complications.

People have painted a bad picture of menopause. That is why for most women, it is the evil incarnate. Several menopause support groups have been created for the purpose of enlightening women on the true nature of menopause. Most of these menopause support groups can be accessed online so people from all over the world may be able to interact and share their views on menopause and how to better cope with it.

The facts that you gather from the doctors, the internet, and medical books, may help you understand menopause better. But ultimately, the thoughts and feelings of other women going through menopause will help you realize that "your menopause" is actually not different from somebody else's. The menopause support groups' that can be accessed via the internet provide forums and message boards where women can "discuss" the many issues surrounding menopause. Early menopause, normal menopause, post menopause, and all their symptoms, and treatments are all taken up in the menopause support groups. While these groups are not intended to take the place of your health care practitioner, they can still shed light on some questions that your doctor may have failed to inform you.

A menopause support group is like your best confidante. You may not get to meet most or all of the members in person but you will be comforted by the fact that you are not alone. Menopause does not just happen to the best of us. Every single female will go through it, whether one is ready for it or not. But the experience will depend on how you welcome menopause into your life.

Summary: Overpowering the negative tendencies of menopause and depression.

Does the menopause and depression association as binding as your court marriage? Or is it as vague as the evolution of man?

Menopause and depression are felt around the same time by some women. Experts identified menopause as the cause and depression as the effect. The reduction in estrogen hormone levels in women during menopause are said to have influenced the occurrence of depression. However other behavioral problems may have possibly triggered the onset of depression. Such behavior tendencies could be menopausal symptoms themselves like mood swings, irritability, anxiety, sleeplessness, decrease in energy, and fatigue. A negative outlook on menopause and depression is not a far possibility. A woman who view menopause as a long and painful aging process can actually feel depressed over time. The thought of losing her youthfulness and beauty to wrinkles and memory loss can cause her to be melancholic.

However, not all women have to go through menopause and depression like one is a pre-requisite of the other. While menopause is a natural occurrence to all females, depression is not. A woman's attitude and lifestyle before the onset of menopause can greatly influence the occurrence of menopause and depression on the actual menopause phase in her life. If a woman is outgoing, lives a healthy lifestyle, and has a generally positive stand in life, menopause wouldn't be as complex as everyone thinks it to be.

If by any chance you are feeling gloomy during the stages of menopause simply because you think you're aging or that you feel so undesirable, there are a number of ways to help you overcome these feelings. These are:

* Take medications
Antidepressants are available as treatment for women suffering from moderate to severe depression. However, it is highly advised that a health care practitioner be consulted before any medication is taken in.

* Consider Hormone Replacement Therapy and Herbal Alternatives
HRT, as with the natural alternative treatments, have never really proven that they are perfectly effective as antidepressant. The studies on these have not gathered enough evidences to establish its effectiveness and safety.

* Get Therapy
Health care professionals like psychologist, psychiatrist, clinical nurse, or social worker should be consulted especially in persistent menopause and depression problems.

* Get Support
Symptoms of menopause and depression are only two of the most discussed issues in menopause support groups. Joining a group will make you realize that you are not alone in what you feel.

Menopause and depression should not necessarily go hand in hand. You can unbind their ties by being more accepting of menopause and treating it as an exciting phase in your adult life. Only then, can one truly conquer depression.

Summary: A discussion on the most crucial time in a woman's life — menopause.

Are you one of those who avoided this topic like you would avoid a person with AIDS? Or are you one of those who can't wait for it to happen? Over the years, people have different stands and views on menopause. So what is it really? Is it a cause for concern or a time for rejoicing? When is it going to happen and will I feel anything?

These are only some of the questions that women all over the world have been asking about. First, let's define menopause. It is a medical term when a woman permanently ends her menstrual periods. Before you start exclaiming hallelujah, there's a lot more you need to know about it.

While menopause is a natural "phenomenon" and is not considered an illness or disease, it is associated with certain health problems like osteoporosis and heart disease. However, this does not mean that you are going to suffer from these two health problems during menopause. The low estrogen levels during menopause may increase your risks of heart disease and the loss of bone density.

Even if menopause is a natural occurrence in a woman's body, let's delve deeper into what really causes it. A woman's ovaries, which store her eggs, are also tasked to produce the estrogen and progesterone needed to regulate menstruation and ovulation. When the ovaries fail to produce an egg every month, menstruation stops and menopause happens.

Menopause usually occurs after a woman turned 40, which is a normal aspect of aging. However, some women experience menopause early, some of which are due to medical treatments like chemotherapy, while others are because the ovaries are damaged. Either way, if menopause happens earlier than usual, it is considered as premature menopause.

Natural menopause is not an abrupt process and there are three stages describing it. These are: perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. The first stage happens way before the actual menopause does. The ovaries at this point are producing lesser estrogen than usual. As the actual menopause nears, the decrease in estrogen production heightens, bringing about menopausal symptoms. Menopause is assessed when a woman hasn't had menstruation for 12 consecutive months. This stage signals the end of estrogen production and release of eggs. The third stage happens years after the actual menopause. Menopausal symptoms will lessen in most women but the health risks will rise due to estrogen loss.

Menopause may be an end to long bouts with PMS and other menstruation discomforts. However, it brings new challenges to women. Proper health care practices are encouraged to make menopause more of a welcome thought than a scary reality.

Summary: Knowing the most beneficial vitamins for menopause.

Vitamins play a vital role in maintaining good health and well being, not only during the menopausal years but even during a woman's childhood years as well. And vitamins are not restricted to women only. Regardless of gender, age, and race, vitamins are essential tools in achieving sound mind and body.

Most people do not realize it but sometimes their diet does not allow them to get all the essential nutrients that the body needs. Vitamins act like support to your diet so that the correct amount of nutrients may be taken in by the body.

Vitamins for menopause work the same way as any other vitamins. A woman during menopause may require them more as several changes are happening inside her body. The most common vitamins for menopause are:

Vitamin A
As a vitamin for healthy skin, eyes and mucous membranes, this is essential because menopausal years bring a lot of physical changes including dry skin. This is also considered as one of the best vitamins for menopause because it prevents heavy bleeding which ultimately leads to cervical cancer.

Vitamin B Complex
While all B vitamins work to support one another, vitamin B6 and B12 are exceptionally necessary. B6 vitamins for menopause are essential especially for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) patients. On the other hand, B12 vitamins for menopause are said to restore lost energy and provide a much greater level than what the person used to have.

Vitamin C
Possibly the best vitamins for menopause, Vitamin C is known as the healing vitamin. Aside from it ability to heal wounds and maintain collagen, vitamin C also helps in bone repair. As people grow older, the need for collagen regeneration rises as well. Thus, this vitamin is a must for people who are going through the middle-age crisis.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D works basically like calcium and estrogen. All are essential in the maintaining healthy bones. Menopausal women are more prone to osteoporosis because of low estrogen production. Thus, vitamin D is an essential component of the diet of women during menopausal years.

Vitamin E
Some call it the "menopausal vitamin" because it has been uses as an estrogen substitute. Some chemical properties of vitamin E are said to be the same as that of the body's estrogen making it an effective remedy for hot flashes and even some psychological effects of menopause.

Even if menopause is farther down the block, these vitamins for menopause may be necessary to people who have not been following careful diets and healthy lifestyles. However, if menopause has knocked on your door, then these vitamins for menopause are a good way to greet it with.

Summary: A rundown on the most common menopause symptoms to better assess the onset of menopause.

Have you been experiencing hot flashes and frequent mood swings lately? Could it be PMS or the onset of menopause?

Menopause symptoms are as variable as the ice cream flavors. No one symptom is the same for all women. Some do not even feel any signs except for the fact that they have stopped menstruating. The menopause symptoms that you might be going through may not be experienced by your best friend who's going through menopause as well. An effective way to know for sure that you are indeed experiencing the end of your menstrual cycle is if you haven't had your period for the last 12 months. Other symptoms which may be "felt" are:

Psychological Menopause Symptoms

Mood swings, irritability, anxieties, depression, and memory loss are only some of the psychological menopause symptoms that have been experienced by women. However, some scientific studies do not blame all these to menopause. Situations like divorce, aging, children moving out of the house, retirement from work all happen around the same time that menopause does. Sleep problems are associated with menopause and may also be a cause for some of these psychological menopause symptoms.

Hot Flushes

This is by far the most common menopause symptoms. Hot flushes are characterized by sudden "feeling" of heat usually on the face or chest, cold sweats, flushing, and clammy feeling. These may be felt as early as four years before the actual end of menstruation and can last for a few years after it.

Sleeping Problems

Several sleep problems like insomnia are experienced by some women during menopause. Others also wake up during the night and find it difficult to go back to sleep.

Sex-Related Problems

Sex-related menopause symptoms have been the focus of arguments for several years. Loss of estrogen does not necessarily mean that women lose interest in sexual intercourse. However, due to vaginal dryness brought about by menopause, women sexual intercourse painful. There are lubricants available to help lessen this problem.

Urinary Problems

During menopause, women are more prone to involuntarily urine discharge especially if urinary infections are present. Laughing, sneezing, coughing, stretching and other physical movements may put pressure on the bladder causing the urine to leak.

Menopause symptoms may not be easy to deal with. Some women may even be experiencing a little of most menopause symptoms, while others are spared the hassles of all those. It's a natural occurrence in a woman's life that has been viewed with scorn and disgust by many, but also with welcome joy by some. Therefore, it is only in accepting menopause, symptoms and all, that one can truly find harmony in having to live with it.

Summary: Learning to accept and live with menopause weight gain and other changes.

Can't seem to button up your pants? Do you feel like your clothes have shrunk one size smaller than it was? Before you start suing the clothes brand or putting the blame on the new detergent you have been using, look at yourself in the mirror. Did your clothes really shrunk or did your tummy just grew big? Before you start running to your ob-gyn for prenatal check-ups, you might want to stop and think. Are you pregnant or simply having signs of menopause?

Menopause weight gain happens gradually as early as the perimenopause stage. Women would notice that their menopause weight gain is more concentrated around the belly or abdomen instead of around the hips and thighs. People term this as the "apple" shape due to the rounder shape of the belly. Women who are having menopause weight gain will lose the "pear" body shape they used to have because it will become increasingly harder for them to distribute their weight evenly around their bodies.

Women who have early menopause will notice a more abrupt and intense menopause weight gain concentrated around the belly as well. As with those that have "normal" menopause, female experiencing early menopause will find it difficult to evenly distribute their menopause weight gain.

Menopause is as hard to deal with as it is without the weight gain. But what women find harder to accept is the fact that the menopause weight gain is a natural effect of menopause. It is not caused by your lack of physical exercise or your new habit of stopping at the pastry shop more often in a week.

Menopause weight gain is inevitable. The hormones in your body have a great influence on your metabolism, fat storage, and even your appetite. That is why the same amount of exercise and the quality of foods that you have had since puberty may not exactly work well during your menopausal life.

While menopause weight gain may be as an unwelcome thing as hair loss, women should try to see the "good" side of it. Gaining a little weight during menopause may actually lessen some menopausal symptoms like hot flushes, and can even help women fight osteoporosis and other diseases. However, excessive menopause weight gain can cause one to have serious illnesses as well. Thus, indulging in weight management program can assist you in achieving a healthy body weight.

Menopause weight gain is not the evil that we all perceive it to be. Making the right food choices and living healthy lifestyles years before the onset of menopause can reduce the burden of dealing with unwanted weight gain. And keep in mind that abrupt weight loss won't let you have curves at the right places.

Soy has been in the limelight for effectively lowering cholesterol. But as a source of menopause relief? Scientific research has found out that the occurrence of hot flashes in women from Asian countries are very minimal. A diet comparison has been done and they discovered that the major composition of Asian diets is soy. Thus, they have concluded that a woman's eating habit is a big factor in lesser incidence of menopausal symptoms.

Summary: Soy and soy products as a natural menopause relief.

The major content of soy which is isoflavones, is basically the reason why it brings forth menopause relief. It is said that these isoflavones, although these are not estrogens, act they way estrogens do. Because of this, soy foods and soy supplements are highly recommended as menopause relief. Women who have been experiencing menopausal symptoms may alleviate the discomforts by taking in soy products.

The studies made in Japan, where soy foods are commonly part of the diet, showed that the women there are very much less likely to experience menopausal symptoms than the women in US or Canada. The isoflavones content of soy possess an estrogen-like effect, thereby decreasing the occurrence of menopausal symptoms.

These studies are paving the way for an alternative option of menopause relief to using the Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). The natural and most convenient way to prevent having the menopausal symptoms is to introduce soy foods and soy supplements into our diet. While the amount of isoflavones in your soy foods vary, a good soy intake goal is 50 mg. Several studies have been conducted on soy and menopause. Some of these gathered the data suggesting that soy can effectively be a menopause relief within one to three months of regular soy intake.

The isoflavones content of soy are actually the same to the structure of the body's estrogen. These isoflavones attach themselves to estrogen receptors, thus creating some of the benefits of estrogen. Soy does not only act as a menopausal relief source, it actually aids in the prevention of menopause-related diseases such as osteoporosis and heart disease. A study confirmed that a regular high soy diet for six months can greatly increase the bone density preventing the incidence of osteoporosis. It is also a given fact that soy is a natural cholesterol-lowering food. And a healthy cholesterol level decreases the risk of heat disease.

There are a number of other methods to find menopause relief. However a natural way to achieve it, and the healthiest as well, is to include soy foods in your diet. Aside from giving you the menopause relief that you need to go through menopause much more easily , soy also helps you get rid of the possible risks of major health problems.

Summary: The facts on hair loss due to menopause that every woman should know about.

Hair loss treatments and other thinning hair remedies all have "for men" written all over them. TV ads show men with balding spots being tried on with miracle products. And then voila! The hair became thicker and longer in a wink of an eye. Basically most hair loss issues are geared towards men. And it's not just because skin head is an "in" thing, or because Billy Zane seems to sport the look. Men simply have the tendency to go completely bald. However, women are not spared from hair loss issues. It is a fact that about two thirds of women actually go through hair loss due to menopause.

Hair loss in women happens more often than is actually perceived. However the extent of hair loss in women is not as pronounced as those in men. Balding spots are not seen in women as they are in men, because their hair loss has mostly a thinning effect. Women's hair loss due to menopause is not even made clear up to now as to its real causes. Even the impact of estrogen in women's hair hasn't been fully understood. However, there are estrogen medications being prescribed by doctors as treatment for hair loss during menopause. There are myths surrounding hair loss due to menopause some of which are as follows:

Myth 1: Hair loss problem is inherited from one's father.
This is partly true. Hair loss like Androgenetic Aplopecia is hereditary-type. However, not just the father is responsible for your inheritance. The genes of both parents are a factor.

Myth 2: Women's hair loss due to menopause results in abnormal bleeding.
Not true. Hair loss does not in any way affect menstruation.

Myth 3: Washing hair too often can cause hair loss.
Definitely not. Hair loss is not a result of a normal hair care practice.

Myth 4: Poor scalp circulation and blocked hair follicles are causes of hair loss.
People have been pointing fingers on these reasons as the real culprits to hair loss. However, this is no more than a publicity by those selling hair loss remedies.

Pattern hair loss due to menopause happens to a lot of women than others might think. Experts have linked this to the decline of estrogen production in the body. It is also said that estrogen supposedly protects us from the testosterone and a particular enzyme inside our body which are responsible in the pattern baldness in women.

Hair loss due to menopause is another addition to the many changes that a woman has to deal with. However, consulting your doctor about your problems may make you more accepting of menopause and all the challenges it brings.

Summary: Guidelines to help you decide whether you should or should not get menopause treatment.

If menopause is a natural occurrence in a woman's life, why need treatment? Does menopause treatment make us avoid having menopause? What is it really?

Menopause is indeed a natural phenomenon in the life of females. Some may experience it earlier than others do, but just the same everyone, women that is, will all go through this phase in life. So why need menopause treatment? Menopause treatment is not created to stop the occurrence of menopause. It is available so that women may go through the stages of menopause with ease.

Surveys revealed that a big percentage of women use hormone therapy as menopause treatment. Herbal remedies have also been the focus of women seeking treatment from menopausal symptoms. Such herbs used for menopause treatment are ginko biloba, ginseng, and black cohosh. Soy has also been scientifically found to be an effective menopause treatment. The soy's isoflavones content is said to have the effects of estrogen in the body, making it a good source of menopausal relief.

While it is highly recommended to see your doctor or health practitioner regarding the proper menopause treatment, most women say that their doctors gave them confusing information on menopause management. They further said that their doctors may be the most reliable source of health information, but were unable to give them the varying alternative therapies available. This may be the reason why more and more women are self-medicating and have been trying on alternative menopause treatment without the scientific proofs on their "healing" claims.

Just as menopausal symptoms are variable, so is menopause treatment. Some women may not feel any symptoms and would rather not deal with any menopause treatment. However, there are those who are actively looking for good remedies. There are several guidelines to help women decide if seeking menopause treatment is a part of their menopause management plan. These are:

* Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is said to offer relief from menopausal symptoms like hot flushes.
* HRT is said to help lessen the risk of having osteoporosis and heart disease.
* HRT is not an option if heart disease is already present.
* As with other medications, HRT is associated with some health risks like cancer.

If you decide to have menopause treatment, make sure you have clearly consulted the advice of your doctor. It is also important that you have been briefed and that you have made you own independent research on the type of menopause treatment that you want. Be consciously aware of all the decisions that you make in your life, most especially regarding health issues. Remember, what works best for some women, may fail on you. Remedy is not a promise of immortality, but merely an aid to getting through life a bit easier.

Summary: A discussion on when a woman needs to take menopause supplements.

Going through menopause is like getting ready for a baby. Shopping for baby clothes and other what-have-you's takes up most of your time. As with preparing for the coming of a new baby into the home, choosing menopause supplements is not a one day affair as well. Your health and well-being is basically dependent on your choice of menopause supplements. Thus, it is best to get some advice from very reliable health care practitioners.

There have been a lot of press releases about some menopause supplements being ineffective contrary to what they claim. Some reports even said that what we knew to be very dependable may even be harmful to us.

Actually, only about a third of the female population experience menopausal symptoms. Some do not even know they are going through menopause until the time that their menstrual periods ended.

So, should you take menopause supplements even if you don't feel the symptoms? Some experts say that despite not feeling any symptoms of menopause, one still has to have menopause supplements. Hormone Replacement Therapy is almost always suggested. However, up to now, there have been arguments to this suggestion regarding the efficiency and harmful effects of HRT. Even if HRT and other menopause supplements have certain benefits, the risks may be far greater.

Does that mean menopause should not be treated unless there are symptoms? Correct. . In fact, studies show that menopause, without those bothersome symptoms, need not be treated. You may know of someone who never felt anything during her menopause. She may have had mood changes more often than usual but she got over it. Menopause symptoms may not even be as severe as those brought about by pregnancy. If you have endured a lot of sacrifices and discomforts when you were pregnant, then there is no reason why you can't live with night sweats, weight gain, and even hot flashes for a few months or more. As long as you are not in extreme pain, Menopause supplements should not be an option.

So temporarily taking in hormones for menopause symptom relief is still unwise? Right. If you decide to have hormone replacement therapy as a remedy for the symptoms till-who-knows-when, you would still experience hot flashes and other symptoms by the time you stop the therapy.

Women should not occupy themselves searching for the best menopause supplements. These may provide temporary relief but it can also be a source of other health-related problems. Instead they should focus more on doing healthy lifestyle changes to better deal with menopause and its symptoms. And like all natural calamities and disasters, all these too shall pass.
