Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning that it can be dissolved in fat. While some vitamin D is supplied by the diet, most of them are made in the body. To make vitamin D, cholesterol, a sterol that is widely distributed in animal tissues and takes place in the yolk of eggs, as well as in various oils and fats, is necessary. Once cholesterol is accessible in the body, a slight alteration in the cholesterol molecule occurs, with one change-taking place in the skin. This alteration needs the energy of sunlight. Vitamin D deficiency, as well as rickets and osteomalacia, tends to takes place in persons who do not get enough sunlight and who fail to eat foods that are rich in vitamin D.

Consummation of Vitamin D

Once consumed, or made in the body, vitamin D is further altered to produce a hormone known as 1, 25-dihydroxy-vitamin D (1, 25-diOH-D). The conversion of vitamin D to 1, 25-diOH-D does not take place in the skin, but in the liver and kidney. Firstly, vitamin D is converted into 25-OH-D in the liver; it then enters the bloodstream, where it is taken-up by the kidneys. At this point, it is changed into 1, 25-diOH-D. Therefore, the manufacture of 1, 25-diOH-D needs the participation of various organs of the body–the liver, kidney, and skin.

Purpose of 1, 25-diOH-D vitamin

The purpose of 1, 25-diOH-D in the body is to maintain the concentration of calcium at a constant level in the bloodstream. The maintenance of calcium at a constant level is absolutely needed for human life to exist, since dissolved calcium is required for nerves and muscles to work. One of the ways in which 1, 25-diOH-D achieves this mission is by stimulating the absorption of dietary calcium by the intestines.

Deficiency of vitamin D

The sequence of events that can be the cause of vitamin D deficiency, then to bone disease, is as follows. A lack of vitamin D in the body generates an inability to manufacture 1, 25-diOH-D, which results in decreased absorption of dietary calcium and increased loss of calcium in the feces. When this happens, the bones of the person are affected. Vitamin D deficiency fallout in a lack of bone mineralization or in other words calcification in growing persons, or in an increased demineralization or in other words decalcification of bone in adults.

Introduction

Vitamin is an organic molecule required by a living organism for its daily requirements. Vitamin D is one of the vitamins from the groups of vitamins. It is a fat soluble vitamin and is not soluble in water. It is needed by our body for the growth and maintenance of the body. This vitamin absorbs all calcium and phosphorous from the bones and makes them healthy and strong.

Deficiencies caused

Vitamin D deficiencies occur when the usual intake is below the recommended level and when the kidney cannot convert the vitamin D into active hormones. Less of vitamin D causes bone and fracture. Rickets is one of the diseases caused due to lack of this vitamin.

Sources of vitamin D

Vitamin D can be got freely and readily from the sun. This is the most easily available source in nature. Usually vitamin D synthesis when it strikes directly on the skin. It can be got from fishes which have a lot of fat in them. Then from milk products as milk itself has less of vitamin D in it. One can take pills also if they are having any deficiencies. It is advisable to take 0.01 milligram of the pill daily for all the elders as well as the children.

Causes of too much of vitamin D

Not always one can take as much of doses they want of vitamin D as it is risky. If one keeps sitting in the direct sunlight then he may tend to get sun burns. Vitamin D is very toxic and therefore over doses may cause nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, weakness and weight loss. It can also increase the blood level of calcium leading to mental changes in a person. This high level of blood can also cause heart rhythm abnormalities. Excess exposure to the sun does not produce an over dose. It also results in abnormalities of calcium metabolism and calcification of soft tissues. Over dose also results in lack of vitamin D level and lactation in women and children. This entire overall can reduce the ability to functions of the body.

Vitamin D is also referred to as calciferol and can rightly be known as the sunshine vitamin, since the body, in a sunny climate can manufacture this nutrient from sunshine on your skin using cholesterol from your body to do so. Vitamin D assists with increasing the absorption of calcium, assists in bone growth and the integrity of bone and promotes strong teeth. It also helps control the amount of phosphorus in the body as well as assisting in a healthy heart and nervous system. In some current studies it has also shown great promise in assisting psoriasis, the immune system, thyroid function as well as normal blood clotting. A shortage can cause softening of the bone and muscle twitching and convulsions, and in children it causes rickets resulting into bent legs. In adults, the shortage causes loss of minerals from the bones, where the bones are sore, tender, and weak muscles with the possibility of deafness developing. In older people, osteoporosis might appear when protein is also lost from the bone.

Supply of vitamin D

Vitamin D in short provides is also linked to having a burning sensation in the mouth and throat, diarrhea, insomnia and visual problems. RDA, is well known by its full name i.e. Recommended Daily Allowance. It is busy being amended and will be called the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) and is a collaborative effort between the USA and Canada. The RDA represents the establishment of a nutritional norm for planning and assessing dietary intake, and are the levels of intake of essential nutrients considered to be adequate to meet the known requires of practically all healthy people.

Clinical guidelines

Some clinical guidelines are there for toxicity are sometimes set as 5,000 to 10,000 IU per day to cause toxicity, but other researchers place the value much higher to reach toxicity. One is however advised to keep your supplement intake to no more than 600 IU per day. Having too much vitamin D in the system could leave a too elevated calcium level, a lower appetite, increased thirst, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and abdominal pain. A long-term effect of too much vitamin D is the deposit of calcium in soft tissues of the body comprising the blood vessel walls and kidneys where it can cause serious damage.

What exactly it is:

The increase in vitamin content of the body is known as hyper vitaminosis d. As a poisoning agent vitamin D is regarded as the least poisonous substances ever known. How ever an over dosage may be the outcome of an increase in 100 times the daily required intake for at least two or three months. In adults toxic effects may be observed by an intake of more than 2500 micro grams or 100,000 International Units per day for several months. Like any other alterations of vitamins or minerals this one is also very harmful and possibly can give rise to a large number of diseases and health hazards.

Symptoms:

As all the food supplements does not contain excessive amounts of this vitamin till date no cases of vitamin toxicity has not been reported. However intakes ofexcessive amounts of cod liver oil over months or years could produce an overdose. Initially the symptoms may comprise of dehydration, Vomiting, Decreased appetite or anorexia, irritability, constipation and fatigue. However, if the conditions pertain for a prolonged period nausea, followed by polyuria, polydipsia, weakness, nervousness and pruritus may also be the outcome. Other possible factors may include high content of calcium in the blood which can cause severe damages to the bones, soft tissues, and kidneys. In other cases it is found to support the formation of kidney stones. Sometimes it is also been observed that vitamin D toxicity can trigger excessive absorption of calcium from the intestine and reabsorption of calcium from bone which may result in the deposition of calcium and phosphorus in soft tissues all over the body, with particular damage to the heart, blood vessels.

Cures:

Treating the toxicity mainly involves in the reduction of the intake through its exclusion from the diet. Other major steps involved are discontinuing the vitamin, providing a low-calcium diet, keeping the urine acidic, and giving corticosteroids. However kidney damage or metastatic calcification of the kidney and the soft tissues of the body are almost irreversible and can be cured by naturally developing the immune system of the body.

It is mostly associated with keeping the bones healthy by maintaining the hormonal balance.

Cortisol and its effect

Cortisol is a steroid hormone and it produced by the adrenal cortex. The main function of cortisol is to restore the original condition of the body after stressful work. It also increases the blood sugar level of the body and thus it can be said that it acts as an antagonist to insulin. Exposing to cortisol for long may damage the memory thought short-term exposure to cortisol may enhance memory to a little extent. Excessive secretion of cortisol may lead to muscle wastage and the immune system may also get suppressed. So it is essential to have regular checkup regarding the amount cortisol in blood. This can help to prevent the body from lots of diseases.

Relation between vitamin D and cortisol

Cortisol is a steroid hormone and it is mainly secreted during stressful conditions. Lots of research has been carried out and it is found that vitamin D and cortisol has got same chemical structure. After that again experiments were carried out to find out the chemical effects of both vitamin D and cortisol when they are taken together. So vitamin D diet and cortisone is administered in the body of the rat and it is found that that both vitamin D and cortisone show antagonistic effect. Research was also carried out to find out the effect of glucocorticoids on the bone cells containing calcium, which is deposited due to vitamin D. It is found that glucocorticoid has very little effect on the bone cells.

Type of vitamin:

This is a fat-soluble vitamin. This is generally supplied to the body through her various type of the food intake and could also be manufactured in the body in the receptor areas .The exposure to sunlight in the dawn causes the metabolism of vitamin D only in the in the mornings.

The Metabolism in the body:

Calciferol is the most active form of vitamin D in the body. The conversion of Vitamin D takes place inside the liver and the kidney. This is then converted into its active forms. The conversion in the liver is to form the e 1,25dihydroxyvitamin D. This helps in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. This form enables the increase in the level of calcium, vitamins, minerals, and hormones to promote mineralization. This prevents rickets in children and oestomalsia in the adults.

Food supplements:

Fortified foodstuffs are the prominent source of Vitamin D. the most selected food sources would be the cod liver oil, salmon, wackerel, pudding, egg, beef, cheese. The Daily Value (DV) for Vitamin D should be 400 IU (10micro grams.)The seasons, geographic latitude, time of the day, cloud cover, smog, sun screen effect the vitamin D synthesis.

Vitamin D deficiencies occur when:

The necessary intake in the body is not full-filled. When there is limited exposure to the sunlight, when the kidney cannot convert the vitamin D to its active hormone form, when there is inadequate absorption of Vitamin D in the stomach and this renders to be the dangers. This results in the problem that causes the weakening if the bones. Thus the daily intake is one of the pivotal reasons in this aspect.

Who requires it the most???

Infants which are being breast-fed, older adults, persons with minimum exposure to the sunlight, persons with large amount of melanin content in their skins, individuals facing problems of mal-absorption of fat like Crohns' disease, Cystic fibrosis, sprue, diseases of the liver.

Overview:

The deficiency of Calciferol is one of the fast -gripping maladies in our country as there is not proper regulation of ht vitamins and minerals in the daily diet of individuals and the resort to the outside food stuffs, the mechanics in the body are hampered. This will only results in the weaker progenies in the future.

The main source of vitamin D for humans is not diet, but rather is produced through photosynthesis of vitamin D from cutaneous 7-dehydrocholesterol upon sunlight exposure to UV B photons with energies between 290 and 315 nm. Furthermore, vitamin D is converted to several metabolites in the body. The 1997 DRI committee used serum 25 (OH) D as the criterion for determining adequacy, as its production is not regulated; therefore, it reflects that both the absorption from the diet and cutaneous synthesis. Reference varies for serum 25 (OH) D were used, but the lower limit of various populations ranged from 20 to 50 nmol/L, likely reflecting obtainable sunlight of the appropriate energy in their environments. In older individuals, AI for vitamin D was based on observed values to protect seasonal variation in PTH, a marker for bone resorption.

In older individuals, AI for vitamin D was based on observed values to protect seasonal variation in PTH, a marker for bone resorption.

More of the vitamin D

Currently, several researchers have questioned the adequacy of current vitamin D recommendations and suggested that daily inputs from diet and cutaneous origin should be 1000 IU or even 3000-5000 IU (75-125 g). Healthy adults can achieve this level of input chiefly through cutaneous production. Early humans, evolving at the equator in East Africa, would have had cutaneous vitamin D synthesis enough to produce serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels at 150 nmol/L. The elderly who have lessened the sun exposure and efficiency of conversion of 7-dehydrocholesterol to vitamin D-3 cannot. As for calcium, there might be different health end points more relevant to different populations for vitamin D; <50 nmol/L of 25 (OH) D might increase risk of secondary hyperparathyroidism enhancing the risk for osteoporosis, rickets or osteomalacia. Holick proposed that higher levels of serum 25 (OH) D (75 nmol/L) might be necessary to maximize cellular health.

Opines of the scientists

Much research is needed to identify appropriate functional end points for vitamin D. Serum 25 (OH) D is an indicator for status, but we have a poor understanding of the relationship of this marker to ultimate the health outcomes. Only currently have we had good information obtainable on the relationship of vitamin D intake and serum 25 (OH) D. Serum 25 (OH) D levels have been connected to serum PTH. Although PTH does promote bone resorption, serum PTH is only a substitute for bone resorption. Additional studies must be conducted to unswervingly relate vitamin D intake to bone loss. Relating vitamin D intakes to measures of most favorable cellular health is in its infancy.

Exposure to sunlight

Sunlight is one of the most important sources of vitamin D. Ultraviolet rays from sunlight generate vitamin D synthesis in the skin. There are many things around us, which affect Ultraviolet ray's exposure. Few of them are season, latitude, time of day, cloud cover, smog and sunscreens. For example, in Boston the average amount of sunlight is insufficient to produce significant vitamin D synthesis in the skin from November through February. Infants are often recommended for vitamin D supplements because human milk may not contain adequate amount of vitamin D. Perhaps sun exposure is the most important source of vitamin D because exposure to sunlight provides most humans with the requirement of their vitamin D. Ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure at least two times a week to face, arms, hands, or back without any sunscreen is usually sufficient to provide adequate amount of vitamin D. It is very important for persons with limited sun exposure to incorporate good sources of vitamin D in their diet. It is very important to routinely use sunscreen to help and prevent skin cancer and other negative consequences of excessive sun exposure. It is almost impossible to get sufficient amounts of vitamin D from your diet. Sunlight exposure is the only trustworthy way to generate vitamin D in your own body.

Effect of overdose of vitamin D

Vitamin D is very much essential for the body in order to keep the body normal functioning. Vitamin D is also required in excess quantities by the elderly person as their body metabolism become very weak and some vitamin supplements is recommended in order to keep them healthy. During malfunctioning of the metabolic activities of the body vitamin D supplements are suggested but they should be taken in required quantities as the overdose may result into serious illness. People sometime don't find necessary to consult a doctor and they examine on their own if they become weak they prefer to take a dose of vitamin D and in this way they increase the amount of vitamin D in their body above the normal level ,. This will give rise disorder known as hypocalcaemia which is characterized by excess deposit of calcium in the body.

Further increase of vitamin intake may result into damage of vital organ of the body person taking excess of vitamin D show severe symptom which includes nausea, vomiting anorexia, headache, weakness, apathy, polyuria, bone pain. Among the disorders caused by excess of vitamin D, hypocalcaemia is the most serious .it is characterized by calcification of soft tissue and it results in renal failure. The ingestion of overdose of vitamin During the time of pregnancy may affect the infants. It is found that the newly born baby of hypercalcaemia mother suffers from suppression of parathyroid dysfunction. Considering the above disorders resulted from the overdose of vitamin D, it has become imperative on the part of the state government and the health officials to provide awareness to the people that intake of excess of vitamin D doesn't result in healthy and disease free body .in this way this serious form of disorders can be avoided.

Vitamin D: effective remedy for prostrate cancer

Different countries across the globe has lately realized the potential behind the vitamin D and carried out research on it. The findings showed that apart from absorbing calcium and protecting the bones, vitamin D can also be used in healing prostrate cancer. This has given rise to new medicinal drug known as DN-101. It is a special formulation consist of high dose of vitamin D. these vitamin supplements are expected to increase the blood level in the patients with prostate cancer. This highly concentrated vitamin Drug is used in the advanced prostate cancer cases. This medicine is applied to patients who got back the prostate malignancies even after treated with the chemotherapy. The patients are found to give satisfactory results and the life line of the patient can be increased. As vitamin D is highly responsible in healing various form of cancer including prostate cancer, therefore its quite advisable to increase vitamin intake in the body which can prevent from getting attacked to various form of cancer and other chronic disorders
The best way to increase vitamin D in the body is to get exposed to sunlight which contain ultraviolet radiation and when the skin get irradiated with ultra violet rays ,vitamin D is produced

Doctors should be consulted regarding the dose of vitamin

It is most commonly found that people in order to avoid them from the deficiency of vitamin D, landed up with another problem because of overdose. It gives rise to various serious illnesses and could be fatal at times. So it is necessary to take experts advice before taking vitamin supplements.

Vitamin D is one of the groups of vitamins. This vitamin is a fat soluble vitamin and is insoluble in water. It regulates calcium and phosphorus levels in the body. It absorbs calcium from the different parts of the body and ad equates blood levels. This vitamin absorbs all the minerals from the intestine and other parts of the body. Deficiency occurs when there is a lack of this vitamin.

Deficiencies of vitamin D

Deficiency usually occurs to those people who are vegetarians as most of this vitamin is found in fatty fishes more than milk products. Rickets is the disease caused due to lack of this vitamin in children. Due to this there is less of calcium in taken and this causes bone pain, dental problem and muscles loss. It may be very dangerous for a child's body as it may become very weak. The other disease is osteoporosis in which the bones accumulate when they are growing. Due to this there may be a bone loss in future. Osteomalacia is also one of the deficiencies and this mainly occurs in adults. This involves softening of the bones. This is called rickets when it happens in children. Deficiency in this vitamin also causes depression, diabetes, birth defects, chronic pain, hypertension, heart disease, strokes and other diseases.

How one can identify the signs of deficiency?

Some form of cancer.
Joint pain.
Muscles twisting
Muscular pain
Weakness in the bones
Soft bones
Sweaty head
Stunted growth

Conclusion

This takes place when there is lack of dietary in take and less exposure to the sun.
It has been noticed that people who have direct exposure to sunlight have less risk as they get a lot of vitamin D. Even women who work during night time and sleep during day time have a risk of getting breast cancer. This vitamin can be got from various sources such as all milk products such as cheese, butter, yogurt and ice-creams. Vitamin D is required for the development, growth, and maintenance of healthy skeleton from birth until death. So to avoid deficiency one should take in the appropriate amount or levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D falls in the category of fat soluble vitamins. It is also a seco-sterol hormone precursor that helps in maintaining the proper levels calcium and phosphorus in the blood of the human. Precisely it will not be correct to describe it as vitamin as it can be manufactured by the human skin under the exposure of the ultra violet radiations of the sun. Medically it also referred as a conditional vitamin and calciferol. Vitamin D exists in more than one form. Primarily it can be categorized into vitamin D1 which is molecular compound of ergocalciferol and luministerol, vitamin D2 composed of ergocalciferol and calciferol, vitamin D3 composed of cholecalciferol, vitamin D4 of dihydroergocalciferol and finally the vitamin D5 composed of sitocalciferol. Of all the sources of vitamin D that are provided by nature sunlight is considered to be the most significant one.

Of all the sources of vitamin D that are provided by nature sunlight is considered to be the most significant one.

Amazing facts about vitamin D:

Vitamin D is stored in different parts of the body. Those organs that act as the main reserves of storage include the bones, spleen, brain and the liver. Another amazing fact about vitamin D is that unlike any other nutrient it can be stored within the body during the summers and can be utilized in the winter month when the exposure of the sun is generally reduced to a great extent. Under the right conditions the human skin can produces quantities up to 20,000 IU and that too without any apparent toxicity in just about a few minutes exposure to the ultra violet radiations of the sun. How ever over exposure to sunlight may also destroy the vitamin D content of the body and it is an absolute myth that prolonged exposure to sunlight causes toxicity as the levels are self regulating within the body.

Sources of vitamin D:

One of the most prominent sources of vitamin D is natural sunshine. The ultra violet rays present in the sunrays triggers the synthesis of vitamin in the skin under favorable conditions. Besides that there are some food sources that contain sufficient amounts of the same. One such food source is fortified milk. Other than this, dark green vegetables, eggs, fish liver oils and fishes such as tuna and salmon and butter are found to contain appreciable amounts of the vitamin in them.

Vitamin D is called Cholecalciferol or the Sunshine Vitamin. It is synthesized in the body when the precursor molecule, 7-dihydrocholesterol absorbs light energy. This vitamin is a steroid hormone regulating the Calcium and Phosphorous levels in the body.

Importance of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin. Its deficiency causes notable symptoms in the body. It is a soluble vitamin .It plays a pivotal role in Calcium and Phosphorous metabolism. It controls mineral absorption in the bone tissues. Vitamin D keeps the bones and teeth healthy

Vitamin D rich Diet

Concentrated sources of vitamin D include salmon, shrimps, cod, milk, eggs and sardines. Sockeye salmon is an extremely rich source of vitamin D. A 4-ounce serving of baked or broiled salmon provides 739.37 IU of vitamin D. Sockeye salmon have high levels of vitamin D as their diet consists of zooplankton and phytoplankton. This plankton are key sources of Vitamin D in the marine food chain. Other vitamin D rich foodstuffs are liver, beef, snapper, Swiss cheese, cow's milk, halibut and goat's milk. It is to be noted that though milk is fortified with vitamin D, dairy products such as cheese and ice cream contain considerably small amounts of the vitamin. Fortified rice or soy beverage, canned salmon, fortified margarine and canned tuna provide high levels of vitamin D. The recommended intake of Vitamin D differs with age and sex. On an average, a 1-year-old kid requires 400IU/day. Adolescents and persons till the age of 50 require 200IU/day. For people above 75, the suggested intake is 600IU/day. People with osteoporosis need more Vitamin D. Pregnant or breastfeeding women do not need supplementary Vitamin D. Breast milk does not contain sufficient quantities of vitamin D. Thus, exclusively breastfed children would require dietary supplements.
Vitamin D is a stable compound. Cooking or storing for too long does not affect its levels in food. Dietary supplements also help to meet the necessary Vitamin D level in the body. Ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) are used in dietary supplements. Yeast and cod liver oil are also sources of vitamin D.

Deficiency of vitamin D

Reduced intake of vitamin D can lead to deficiency symptoms. These symptoms reduction of absorption of calcium and phosphorous. This has negative impacts on bone mineralization. In children, this condition gives rise to rickets and Osteomalacia in adults.

Introduction

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which is found in many forms. Our body needs I because it helps in the growth of teeth and bones. It is produced in our body itself with the help of sunlight. Milk, fish and egg do contain vitamin D. lack of vitamin D causes several bone diseases like Rickets, Osteoporosis, Osteomalacia, etc. Rickets is a disease, which affects children. It badly affects the growth and deformity of bones.

Its role in prevention from cancer

Two characteristics of cancer cells are their lack of separation and their quick growth or production. A lot of malignant tumors have been found to hold vitamin D receptors including breast, lung, skin, bone, etc. Many forms of vitamin D have ability to induce cell separation and inhabit proliferation of cancerous and non-cancerous cells maintained in cell culture. If a certain amount of vitamin D is consumed daily then it cuts the risk of breast cancer, colon cancer and ovary cancer by up to a half. The proof for the protective effect of the "sunshine vitamin" is so irresistible that immediate action must be taken by public health authorities to boost blood levels, say cancer specialists. A growing body of evidence in recent years has shown that lack of vitamin D may have fatal effects. Heart disease, lung disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis are among the situation in which it is said to play a vital role. It is also necessary for bone health and protects against rickets in children and osteoporosis in the elderly.

Precaution regarding vitamin D

The study accepted that large doses of vitamin D should be treated with carefulness. They failed to give any mechanism for how low levels of vitamin D are really linked to high incidence of cancer. More than 2,000 IU – 50 micrograms of vitamin D a day can lead to the body captivating too much calcium, damaging the liver and kidneys. In the lack of sunshine, a valuable level of vitamin D could be obtained from a combination of food sources and supplements. Dark-skinned people, though, need more exposure to create sufficient amounts of vitamin D, and some fair-skinned people shouldn't try to get any vitamin D from the sun. The easiest and most trustworthy way of getting the proper amount is from food and a daily supplements.

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease in which chronic degenerative occurs. Multiple sclerosis can be defined as gradual destruction of the myelin sheath protecting the nerves. This destruction occurs in patches throughout the brain or spinal cord. This destruction of myelin affects transmission of electrical signals to nerve cells and causing muscular weakness and loss of coordination. This disease affects more women than humans. His disease generally occurs between the ages of 15-45. This disease is found exclusively in humans and not in any other mammal. Multiple sclerosis originates when immune cells are able to pass through the normally impassable blood brain barrier. Immune cells break into the central nervous system and begin to attack the myelin.

The blood brain barrier may be compromised because of an earlier broad spectrum immune reaction that damaged it while in the process of attacking other foreign matter.

A major factor in some cases of multiple sclerosis may be a diet that includes foods that cause immune reactions in some people predisposed to MS, such as wheat, milk, eggs, and foods high in saturated fats. Other causes may include chemical poisoning, bacteria and viruses. Aspartame "poisoning" and Lyme disease symptoms may mimic those of multiple sclerosis.

In addition, many people suffering from Multiple Sclerosis have malabsorption problems, meaning their body have problems getting the minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients out of the food they eat.

Role of vitamin D in multiple sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disease of the CNS (the Central Nervous System.) Both the myelin sheathing around nerve tissue and the axons or tissue themselves which conduct nerve impulses undergo an attack primarily mounted by the immune system. Over time this attack leaves scars called lesions which interfere with the transmission of signals to and from the brain. This immune attack against the "self" is called autoimmunity.

Epidemiologists have long observed a geographical north south gradient in MS occurrence. Moving further from earth's equator, there are more MS cases per capita. And among populations with similar genetics, those living at very high elevations are statistically less likely to contract MS than those below who live beneath a thicker layer of U.V. diminishing air.

Coastal populations where diets are rich in fish containing D3 are also less likely to have MS than inlanders in those same regions without fish in their diets.

These findings and our reliance on sunlight to produce VD3 coupled with its increasingly well documented immune system modulation have led many in the medical and research communities to suspect that a deficit of VD3 is involved in the development of multiple sclerosis.
It is beyond the scope of this article to fully describe the interactions of VD3 and immune system elements. If it were even currently possible, doing so would probably require several volumes. Of necessity, the following is only a few pertinent lines from a very long play.

Vitamin D is a form of steroid hormone. It plays a very important role in the mineralization of the bone and in the maintaining an adequate level of calcium and phosphorus in the body. Vitamin D is composed of either vitamin D 3 or Vitamin D 2 molecule.

Formation of vitamin D

Vitamin D is synthesized mainly through the skin. Thus adequate exposure to sunlight can help enhance the level of vitamin D in the body. The Vitamin D 3 molecule is also known as cholecalciferol. In the liver, this cholecalciferol is hydroxylated to 25-hydrooxycholecalciferol. This is done with the help of an enzyme known as 25-hydroxylase. Within the kidney 1, 25 – dihydroxycholecalciferol is produced from 1-alpha-hydroxylase. In this process 25-vitamin D is used as a substrate. 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol is the active biological form of vitamin D. in our skin vitamin D is produced with the help of UVB, which is present in the sunlight.

Sources of vitamin D

Vitamin D is abundantly present in sunlight. Hence, appropriate exposure to the morning sun is apt for taking in vitamin D. moreover, green leafy vegetables too are rich in vitamin D. in order to enhance the level of vitamin D in the body, and it is also advisable to consume fish. Fishes such as sardine, salmon, tuna and so on are rich in vitamin D. it is also said that egg yolk can help solve vitamin D deficiency.

Diseases caused due to deficiency of vitamin D

Deficiency of vitamin D can lead to considerable problems. Rickets is one such disease caused due to lack of vitamin D in the body. Rickets is also known as osteoporosis. In this kind of disease the bone density reduces and as a result it turns brittle and eventually breaks down. Moreover, it may lead to fatigue, high blood pressure, arthritis and sometimes even cardiac diseases. Osteomalacia is another problem that one may have to deal with due to lack of vitamin D. hence it is very important to eat the right kind of food. But along with this, one must remember that too much of anything can be injurious too. So a proportionate food and exercise is the right way to lead a healthy life.

As one knows all dietary foods are required for the body. This includes calcium, carbohydrates, fats, proteins etc. These all need to be in equal proportion to get the exact effect. All these groups have their own functions such as proteins are for making our body strong. If our body lacks even one of then it may lead to a deficiency. So there is a need to keep a check on their dietary intake.

Introduction

As one knows all dietary foods are required for the body. This includes calcium, carbohydrates, fats, proteins etc. These all need to be in equal proportion to get the exact effect. All these groups have their own functions such as proteins are for making our body strong. If our body lacks even one of then it may lead to a deficiency. So there is a need to keep a check on their dietary intake.

Information on vitamin D

Vitamin D has many functions like the others. This is a vitamin which absorbs calcium from the food which is important for the development of healthy bones and teeth. It also maintains the blood level in the body. It keeps a check on the level of calcium and phosphorous. Vitamin D also absorbs the nutrients in the small intestine. It is also essential for mineralization of process of the bones. Without vitamin D our bones would have been thin, brittle and weak. Vitamin D also maintains a healthy immune system and regulates cell growth. Active vitamin D sends impulses to the brain to regulate everything. It has got a moderate melting point and is slightly soluble in water.

Function of d biotin

Biotin is used for the proper metabolism of the body and it can utilize glucose very efficiently. One of the most important characteristic features of d biotin is that it can be absorbed in the body very easily and it is stored in the mitochondria.

Application of medicines containing d biotin

D Biotin is a white crystalline vitamin, which is used, in different forms to activate the metabolic process and thus effect the overall metabolic growth of the body. Recently it is also proved that biotin when combined properly with other important substances enhance the growth of the nail and the nail look beautiful. This use of nail strengthening technique by the use of biotin is called appearex therapy. It involves the use of appearex a tablet that contain 2.5-milligram biotin. Nail contains a protein called keratin whose activity is enhanced by the use of biotin. This helps in enhancing the growth of epidermal cells surrounding the nail and the quality of the nail is increased .it also improve the quality of skin as well as hair which also contain protein keratin. It is experimented scientifically and found that everyday intake of 2.5 milligram d biotin can will be sufficient to the keratin which can eventually give rise to formation of nail of better quality. Appearex is authorized product produced by Merz Pharmaceuticals and is found to have given far satisfactory result as compared to products of other companies. Thus finally the importance of biotin is realized and apart from just helping in the metabolic process, it is also used in various other fields such as developing medicines and d biotin is become a hot topic for research in various counties and china is ahead in the race to compete with the global market.

For a good health one needs to take a well balanced. For a well balanced diet one need to intake minerals, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins in the right proportion. All is very important or it leads to deficiencies.

What exactly is vitamin D?

It is a vitamin which is fats soluble. It is also known as sunshine element. This vitamin is very important as it transfers calcium from the bones to the blood stream. It helps in formation of blood cells. This vitamin is directly got from the rays of the sun. This is also required to increase the amount of insulin in the blood stream. It is also described as a conditional vitamin and is also called as calciferol. It has many types in them like D1, D2, D3, and D4. This also helps in the growth of the bones. This vitamin is insoluble in water. Reserves of this vitamin are found in liver, skin, brain and bones. Very little of this vitamin is found in the urine. It increases calcium and phosphorus.

Sources of vitamin D:

It's main and easily found source is the sun. Cod liver oil is the best source of vitamin D. It is also found in eggs yolk and butter. It is also found in dairy products like cheese, yogurt, ice- creams even though milk lacks vitamin D. This is also found in fatty fishes like salmon, eel, sardines and mackerel. Recommended doses daily for the following people are: men -0.01 milligram, women- 0.01 milligram, and children-0.01 milligram.

Deficiency of vitamin D:

This deficiency usually causes bone diseases like rickets in which there is a failure of growth of bones. Malnutrition of this may possibly be linked with chronic diseases such as cancer. This includes all kinds of cancers such as lung, colon and skin. A person experiences blood pressure, mental problems, weakness, chronic fatigue. There is decrease in blood levels in the body. Deficiency occurs when the kidney does not produce vitamin D.

Conclusion:

It is not that important to take over doses of vitamin D as it leads to vomiting, nausea, poor appetite, weakness and weight loss. People who get plenty of exposure should not take extra doses as that much is enough for them. Over all it is also important to take the right amount of vitamin D.

The human body requires all kinds of vital ingredients in order to stay fit and healthy. Each one knows about the importance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and minerals to the body. There is no denying the fact that the vitamins too are equally important. Vitamin A, C, E all have a specific role to play in the smooth functioning of the body. Vitamin D has its own place in the scheme of things. Its importance, its role and its basics are all studied deeply by medical experts and researchers.

More about Vitamin D Research

Vitamin D is extremely essential for the well-being of bones. Lack of Vitamin D makes the bones weak and fragile. The main source of Vitamin D is the sun. The rays of the early morning sun consist of vitamin D which is extremely necessary for the bones. The sun emits ultra violet rays which actually have vitamin D. There have been several researches conducted which have come out with different and contradictory.

Recently, there have been several researchers who have propounded theories which advise the use of sun screens and sun block creams to all people when they step out in the sun. According to these researchers sun rays are harmful for the skin and the ultra violet rays of the sun can cause skin cancer. Researchers have come out with some contradictory results too. They conducted a research on the importance of sun as a source of the crucial vitamin D. They found out that it was a key feature in preventing and even curing various kinds of cancer. The vitamin D provided by the sun was helpful for treating prostate, lung and surprisingly skin cancer. It has also known to be helpful in curing colon cancer and lymphoma.

Studies claim that vitamin D from the sun can cause any damage only in the rarest situations. Thus, over-exposure to the sun is not so much of a threat as much as its under-exposure. Lack of vitamin D can cause graver troubles which can be very difficult to cure and can also be fatal. Though vitamin D is available in milk, tuna, salmon and other kinds of oily fish, it is not enough. The most important source of vitamin D is the sun which highlights the importance of exposure to the sun.

Conclusion

Vitamin D has been the subject of extensive research by numerous medical researchers and experts. There have been several theories and opinions expressed about the importance and ideal sources of vitamin D. However, in any case one thing is certain that vitamin D helps the body in many ways and the lack of it can have serious consequences.

Introduction

Vitamin D is a sunshine vitamin. It is a fat soluble vitamin and is not soluble in water. This vitamin is used to absorb calcium and phosphorous from the different parts of the body. This vitamin is also needed to keep the bones and teeth healthy as it absorbs calcium. It helps in passing of impulses to the brain. The easiest and most freely available source is the ultraviolet rays or the sun what we usually called. It also maintains the insulin level in the blood stream.

Foods that contain vitamin D

There are many foods where you get vitamin D. There are sources where you can get it from natural herbs. It can be got from animal products such as eggs, butter milk and others. Milk has less of vitamin D but milk products have lots of vitamin D. Some ready made or ready to eat products are forfeited with vitamin D. Fatty fishes like salmon and tuna fish are rich in vitamin D. One of the best sources is the cod liver oil and it is the richest in vitamin D. It is also got from liver and beef. It has been noticed that orange juice is fortified with vitamin D. In eggs vitamin D is mainly in the yolk. Very few foods naturally contain this vitamin. Swordfish contains vitamin D but in a relative amount. Breakfast cereals have this kind of vitamin in them. Pastries, bread, crackers, cereal grain bars and other foods may contain about 10% to15% of vitamin D in them. Puddings that are made of mix and forfeited vitamin D milk are also a good source.

Conclusion

Lack of this vitamin causes rickets in children and in adults. Extra doses of this cause toxicity. It also causes nausea, vomiting, muscle pain and other problems. Deficiencies may also cause if one does not get enough sunlight. To avoid the entire deficiencies one must keep a check on all the food intakes. One must be able to keep tact of all the wonderful foods that contain vitamin D. It is very important to know that which food contains how much of each vitamin so that they can choose accordingly.

Of all the vitamins, it is the vitamin D which has caught the attention of most medical experts and practioners all over the world. It is one of the most talked about and the most studied subject in the field of medicine. Vitamin D is crucial is vital for treating certain disorders and has immense therapeutic value among the different vitamins.

Use of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is useful for the body is many ways. Primarily, vitamin D works in the absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. Vitamin D controls the calcium levels in the blood. If there is calcium deficiency in the diet then the calcium requirement is satisfied by absorbing from the bones. Vitamin D is also extremely important for having a healthy immune system in the body, strengthen body muscles and necessary in hormone production. It has also been discovered that vitamin D is a better anti-oxidant than vitamin E. The role of vitamin D extends to preventing other major disorders too. Vitamin D is said to prevent even diseases like diabetes of complex levels. Vitamin D is extremely important for the well being of the eyes. It protects the eyes from problems like senile cataract. Vitamin D can also play a key role in eliminating multiple sclerosis.

The sun is the best source of vitamin D. However, it is advised that the body must be exposed to the sun in short intervals rather than a prolonged exposure. The body receives vitamin D from the UV rays of the sun. A prolonged exposure is harmful for the immune system and also causes sun burns. People are always advised to take sun baths for a short period of time to actually take advantage of the UV rays of the sun and replenish the amounts of vitamin D.

It often happens that individuals living in certain locations do not get sufficient sun light. They have a threat of vitamin D deficiency. Such people can make use of sunlamps made of Sperti which provide ultra violet rays. This can be helpful for eliminating any kind of vitamin D deficiency.

Conclusion

Vitamin D can offer solutions to numerous health problems. Medical experts believe that vitamin D has immense therapeutic value and some of its qualities may not have been even discovered. The entire potential of vitamin D is yet to be captured.

Source of vitamin D in milk:

Vitamin can be easily synthesized within the skin under exposure of the ultra violet radiation of the sunrays in favorable conditions. This vitamin is contained in the milk of all the lactating animals including the humans. The concentration is most in cow's milk and contains up to 30-70 international units per quart. However the department of food and drug administration suggests normally the average requirement of an individual may be 200-400 international units and so emphasis has been laid on the supplementation of cow's milk with chemically synthesized vitamin D3 which itself is a compound of the vitamin D. Currently in the United States most of the milk that is sold for human consumption contains 400 international units of the chemically synthesized vitamin D3 added per quart and bears a notice on the milk carton label. Thus any form of milk, pasteurized, evaporated or condensed that is sold commercially in the US contains vitamin D3 of two origins, one made by the cow using sunlight to irradiate 7-dehydrocholesterol present in her skin and the other made by a chemical process and then added to the cow's milk as a nutritional supplement.

Advantages of vitamin D from milk:

As the skin is able to able to manufacture vitamin D from the ultra violet radiations of the sunrays, most of the population that live near the equator will have no shortfall of the nutrient, as their bodies will be making from 10,000 to 20,000 international units of this vitamin each day. However with out burst of the population over the course of time has compelled many to move towards the higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere where up to half the year, solar-UV exposure isn't enough to fuel vitamin D synthesis within the skin. In this regard milk can act as a perfect option with appreciable content of the vitamin. This initiative can also give a boost to the diary industry that may prove fruitful in terms of the national economy. More over with a considerable increase in the complaints of sunburns and skin cancer people even in the higher latitudes are concerned about the sun exposure of the skin for natural production of the vitamin. Recent studies also indicated that it could be hazardous for the health. It is also found out that vitamin D derived from milk has got a wide range of advantages and benefits such as the nutrients effectiveness in fighting cancer and diabetes, usefulness for the treatment of mental depression and schizophrenia etc.

Functions of vitamin D:

One of the most important and major biological functions of vitamin D is to maintain appropriate levels of calcium and phosphorus in human blood. Calcium is vital in the strengthening of the bones and phosphorus is needed in maintaining good teeth and bones and for the proper functioning of the nerves of the muscles. Vitamin D is very essential for the body as it aids in the absorption of calcium, which helps in the formation, and the maintenance of strong bones and without it the bones may become thin, brittle and soft along with other deformations. Vitamin becomes more important with the increase in the age, for not only the strength of the bones but also the teeth. In a study that was recently conducted in the United States it has been found out that men and women over the age group of 50 years who lack in this vitamin has significantly increased chances of having the periodontal diseases that accounts for the common chronic inflammation of the gums and causes the loss of tooth. Vitamin is also effective in controlling the growth of cells.

Effects of vitamin D:

It is found that vitamin D actively interferes with the effectiveness of the calcium channel blockers. This class of drugs is extensively used in the treatment of high blood pressure; chest pain and irregular heart beats. It can also increase the normal levels of calcium in the blood when a supplement of vitamin D is taken along with thiazide diuretics. Apart from theses another very common disorder that is found in the adults due to over dosage of vitamin D through dietary intake is hypercalcaemia a condition in which the levels of calcium in the blood rises than the normal requirements. A prolonged prevalence of such a condition may lead to serious threats to the health including damage to the heart and kidney. In some cases it is observed that hyper content of vitamin D through synthesis of ultra violet rays of the sun by the skin can cause toxicity. The usual symptoms include nausea, vomiting, anorexia, headaches, weakness and pain in the bone. As this vitamin plays an important role in the mineralizing and calcification of the bones excessive ingestion of it may give rise to deformities in the skeletal structure and abnormalities in the metabolism of calcium within the body.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and mostly found in eggs and fishes; it is highly nutritious for the body. Vitamin D acts as a catalyst in our body and activates various metabolic processes. The essential metabolites formed are carbohydrates and fatty acids, which is very helpful for the body. Vitamin D is mostly related with calcium and phosphorous content of the body. Calcium and phosphorous are also very important and helps in all round development of the body. Calcium is mainly responsible for keeping the bones healthy and its deficiency causes various disorders in bones. Taking various dietary supplements rich in vitamin D can enhance vitamin D level in the body. In some cases various medicines, which are rich in vitamin, are also taken to bring the body up to normal level as vitamin D is concerned. Vitamin D can also be obtained from sunlight and therefore daily exposure to sunlight for some time is important to keep the body free of disorder in bones.

Side effects of vitamin D

Vitamin D supplements should be taken in moderate quantities as excessive amount of vitamin give rise to various disorders due to change in the metabolic process. When the vitamin D supplements exceed the normal level, calcium absorption increases and the amount the calcium in the blood increases. This increased level of calcium in blood results into deposition of calcium in the soft tissues and can lead to failure of vital organs. Arteriosclerosis and ischemic heart disease are the commonly known side effects of vitamin D . The disturbances in the intake of vitamin D may also lead to a disorder in eye. This is known as glaucoma. It is a disorder of eye due to increase in the glucose level. This is characterized by frequent secretion of watery fluid from the eye. Increased level of vitamin D also increases the risk of cancer. The women with increased level of vitamin D develop risk for breast Cancer whereas male develops risk for prostate and colon cancer. Osteoporosis and arthritis are the disorder of bones caused due to deficiency of vitamin D but sometimes these disorders cn also be felt when vitamin D intake increases marginally. Calcification, dry skins are the other important disorders created due to increse in quantity of vitamin D .

MS basically is the abbreviation of the medical term of multiple sclerosis. The cause of multiple sclerosis involves immune attacks against the body's own brain and spinal cord tissues, is unknown. Worldwide, multiple sclerosis takes place with much less frequency in lower latitudes closer to the equator, than in higher latitudes, further away from the equator. It is believed that there may be genetic, infectious, and environmental factors that increase or decrease an individual's risk of developing multiple sclerosis. One of numerous possible protective factors at work in lower latitudes, which are being explored, is the increased sunlight exposure in these areas and the resulting increase in the body's production of vitamin D. Vitamin D is accessible not only through sun exposure but also from nutritional sources and vitamin supplementation.

Importance as regards to women community

Women whose intake of vitamin D was greater than or equal to about 400 IU/day i.e. the amount generally contained in multivitamin supplements, from either supplements mostly multivitamins and food, or from supplements alone, had a forty percent lower risk of developing multiple sclerosis than those women who did not take vitamin D supplements. No reduced risks were discovered for vitamin D intake from food alone. Further analyses of smoking habits and birthplace did not affect the results. There is no information by the study done by the researchers that determines whether vitamin D affects the course of multiple sclerosis once it has begun.

Components of Vitamin D

Importantly, vitamin D intake was sturdily associated with intake of other components of multivitamins, including vitamins A and E and folic acid. Therefore, it was not probable for the group to analyze the effects of vitamin D intake independently from these other vitamins. The authors note that the strongest facts to date implicates vitamin D, and suggest that this vitamin seems to be the most probable candidate for association with reduced risk of multiple sclerosis. In general, Vitamin D facilitates the body use calcium. In addition, immune cells are prejudiced by vitamin D, and preliminary research suggests that vitamin D can alter immune attacks in mice with multiple sclerosis like disease.

In order to lead a healthy life it is very important to eat the right kind of food. This is because; through food we can fulfill the nutrient requirement of our body. Calcium and vitamin D is one such vital mineral. They work in symbiosis and help in developing bones and teeth.

Calcium

In our body 99% of calcium is present in the bones and teeth and around 1 % is present in our blood, muscles and soft tissues. Calcium plays an important role in the formation of bones and teeth. It also prevents the decaying of bones and thus makes them hard and strong. It helps in lubricating the muscles and facilitates normal clotting of blood. Calcium also assists in the passage of messages through the nerves from the brain to the other parts and vice versa. It helps in regulating the blood pressure. Calcium reduces the rich of cancer and other vital diseases. Milk, fortified rice and fortified margarine are rich in calcium. Fishes such as salmon, tuna etc. may also be rich sources of calcium.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. Vitamin D is synthesized through the skin. Hence, adequate exposure to the early sun can be helpful in increasing the level of vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D helps in the metabolism of calcium and also assists absorption of vital minerals into the bone. Thus, vitamin D helps in building strong bones and teeth. Egg and egg yolk, fishes such as sardine, salmon, etc., fish oil and cod liver oil are rich sources of vitamin D.

Lack of calcium and vitamin D in the diet

A poor level or deficiency of calcium and vitamin D may lead to several disorders. Deficiency of these minerals may lead to rickets, also known as osteoporosis. This disease mostly occurs in adults especially in women. It results into loss of bone density. The bones thus become thin, porous, and brittle and break down. In rare cases, the bones in the spinal chord break down and can no longer support the back. As a result of this the lungs and other organs cannot function properly.

Any deformities or diseases of the bone can trace the basic deficiency symptoms of vitamin D. This is because of the fact that vitamin D controls the appropriate levels of calcium and phosphorus in the bones which keeps them in well form and structure. If there is a deficiency than the levels of these minerals within the body are altered and this leads to the deformities. Some of the classic examples of such diseases are rickets, osteoporosis and osteomalacia. Rickets is caused by then vitamin D deficiency and often occurs during the childhood period. It can be easily characterized by a stunted growth of the bones and deformities of the long bones. Osteomalacia occurs only in the mature skeleton and it causes the bones to be fragile and also proximal weakening of the muscles. Studies related to the deficiency of the vitamin may also lead to some serious health complication which, may include cancer of different types mainly breast, ovarian, colon, prostate, lung and skin, diabetes, high blood pressure, mental illnesses and heart diseases among the others.

Causes of vitamin D deficiency:

Vitamin D has a very unique character by virtue of it can be synthesized within the skin under favorable conditions upon exposure to the ultra violet radiation of the sunrays. Other than this there are also a number of food supplements that contain appreciable amounts of the vitamin. However in general vitamin D deficiency is a very rare phenomenon. But there may be some exceptional cases as well. For example people in the northern latitudes or colder regions who wears clothing that covers the whole of their body may be deficient of the vitamin as the exposure to the sunrays are obstructed completely. The same may account to those peoples who work for profession that allows minimum exposure to the healing rays of the sun. In some cases it is found that the deficiency is the outcome of insufficient dietary intake. Fortified milk acts as a very good source of vitamin D. Other than this Mother Nature has provided a lot of other plant and animal based food products that has a handsome content of this vitamin. Shrimps, goats milk, cereals, fishes like salmon, mackerel, sardines, eggs and beef liver are some of the most important natural sources of vitamin D and can reduce the chances of deficiency effectively.

One of the most essential elements to our body nutrition is Vitamin D. Other names of Vitamin D are D3, sunlight vitamin and NR1|1 antibody. The nutrient is produced naturally in our body when exposed to sunlight. It is also substance required in our body in small but regular amounts through a regular diet. The NR1|1 antibody is also used to prevent some types of cancers and to strengthen the immune system and the bones of our body by increasing the calcium absorption in our body. The rich sources of Vitamin D are all the animal products and salt water fishes where as the poor but effective sources are eggs, beef, butter, vegetable oil and fruits. The absence of this nutrient could cause various types of disease in our body.

Disease caused due to Vitamin D deficiency: -

Lack of vitamin D causes muscular pain, stunted growth, muscle twitching and restlessness. The other dreadful diseases caused due to lack of intake of vitamin D are:

1) Rickets: – Vitamin D is essential in maintaining the levels of phosphorous and calcium which are found in the blood stream. Lack of vitamin D decreases the levels of phosphorous and calcium causing rickets. It is often found in children and is often characterized by the under development of bones, which do not harden. This also results into mild to severe skeletal deformities.
2) In adults lack of Vitamin D causes osteomalacia and osteoporosis.
3) The skin, liver and kidneys lose their capacity to synthesize and activate vitamin D with advancing age.
4) Disorders like bloating, loss of appetite and weight loss are also observed.
5) Forehead of a person enlarges due to lack of Vitamin D.
6) Restlessness, frequent fractures and irritability is also observed.
7) Some types of cancers like breast cancer and colon cancer are also caused due to lack of Vitamin D.

Thus, adequate amount of Vitamin D is essential as to prevent causing of any such forms of disease or disorders. Cofactor vitamins and minerals are vital for good health because they ensure that enzymes and enzyme-mediated conversions function properly in the body. These cofactors can be obtained from a sufficiently varied diet. It is strongly recommended that people should try all essential vitamins and minerals from their diet. Thus, eat enough fruit, vegetables, beans, pulses, meat and so on to ensure that the body is not deficient in any vitamins or minerals.

Importance of Vitamin D: -

One of the most essential elements to our body is Vitamin D. It is also known as sunlight vitamin, D3 and NR1|1 antibody. Exposure of the body to sunlight or ultra-violet rays produces Vitamin D within our body. D3 is a substance required by the body in small but regular amounts through a regular diet. The NR1|1 antibody is used to prevent some types of cancers and to strengthen the immune system and the bones of our body by increasing the calcium absorption.

Animal product salt water fishes are rich sources of Vitamin D whereas eggs, beef, butter, vegetable oil, fruits constitute small amounts of Vitamin D proportions in them.

Deficiency of Vitamin D and its symptoms:-

One of the most common reasons for deficiency of Vitamin D is the lack of exposure of human body to sunlight. Lack of sunlight can lead to Vitamin D deficiency rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Not having proportional diet is also one of the reasons for the lack of receptor antibody.

Signs of Vitamin D deficiency rickets include various disorders like softening of bones, enlarged forehead, irritability, stunted growth, restlessness, fractures, delayed dentition, weakening of muscles.

Besides rickets other disorders or disease that are observed are

1) Some forms of cancer such as breast cancer and colon cancer.
2) Muscular weakness
3) Joint pain
4) Muscle twitching

Other factors that prevent Vitamin D absorption from dietary sources are mineral oil, antacids, liver and gall bladder disorders and some cholesterol lowering drugs. Obesity also contributes to lower the proportions of D3 in a human body. More disorders like bloating, loss of appetite, weight loss are also observed.

Thus, adequate amount of Vitamin D is essential as to prevent causing of any such forms of disease or disorders. Cofactor vitamins and minerals are vital for good health because they ensure that enzymes and enzyme-mediated conversions function properly in the body. It is a fat soluble vitamin that is found in food. 25 hydroxy Vitamin D can also be made in our body after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Vitamin D is exists in different forms. Each form of Vitamin D has a different level of activity. Calciferol is relatively most active form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D needs a chemical conversion in the liver and kidney to make the physiologically active form of vitamin D. Active vitamin D works similar to a hormone because it increases the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine. The foremost biological function of 25 hydroxy Vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D promotes the calcium absorption to form and maintain strong bones. Vitamin D also works with a number of other vitamins, minerals, and hormones to promote bone mineralization.

Sources of 25 hydroxy Vitamin D

There are two main sources of vitamin D- food sources and the sunlight. Milk is richly fortified with vitamin D, but other dairy products made from milk, such as cheese and ice creams, contain only small amounts. Some ready-to-eat cereals available in market also contain vitamin D. The other commonly available food sources of the vitamin D are cod liver oil, Salmon, Tuna fish, Sardines and Margarine etc. Sun light is perhaps the most significant source of vitamin D, because exposure to sunlight provides most humans with their vitamin D requisite. UV rays in the sunlight trigger vitamin D synthesis in skin. Sun exposure of ten to fifteen minutes at least two times a week to the body parts without sunscreen is generally adequate to provide ample vitamin D.

Deficiency of vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency can occur in human beings due to many reasons. Deficiency of vitamin D can occur when the intake is below recommended levels or there is limited exposure to sunlight. The deficiency can also occur when kidney cannot convert vitamin D to its active hormone form or when a person cannot adequately absorb vitamin D. The vitamin D deficiency can also cause diseases such as Rickets and Osteomalacia. Rickets is a bone disease usually found in children characterized by a malfunction to properly mineralize bone tissue. In adults this deficiency can lead to Osteomalacia, which is a muscular weakness in addition to weak bones.
