Cerebral Palsy Therapy
Although many therapies are available for treating cerebral palsy, here is a brief overview of few of the most basic approaches to the therapies used to help a child achieve his optimum level of functioning.
Aquatic Therapy:
Aquatic therapy is an occupational therapy performed in a heated (between 92 and 96 degrees) pool so that the warm temperature helps to decrease spasticity and the buoyancy of the water enables the patient an increased range of motion.
Auditory Integration Therapy:
Auditory integration therapy helps people with disorders of the auditory system such as hearing loss or distortion. Auditory integration therapy also helps children with autism, dyslexia, learning disorders, pervasive developmental disorders, central auditory processing disorder, attention deficit disorder and depression.
Baclofen Therapy:
This therapy is most effective for patients with severe spasticity and consists of administering baclofen orally or through a pump implanted near the spine that injects baclofen directly into the spinal cord. Baclofen therapy is beneficial to reduce tone, spasms and pain and increase mobility.
Botox Therapy:
Botox therapy comprises of injecting botulinum toxin into spastic muscles to weaken them. This therapy can help to decrease scissoring of legs and spasticity even after the injections ear off but the muscle weakness is temporary and the shots must be repeated every six months
Constrained Induced Therapy:
This therapy is used mainly for stroke victims and is based on the idea that the brain can "rewire" itself if the patient is encouraged to use the more-affected parts of the body and not fall back on the more functional limbs. This therapy has been effective in improving the quality of movement in many patients.
Cranio-Sacral Therapy:
Craino-sacral therapy is a gentle therapy that enhances the functioning of cranio-sacral system that is the brain and spinal cord and in this system restrictions are released by using light touch. This treatment is effective in making the gait steady the gait and properly alignment of the body.
Dance Therapy and Music Therapy:
Dance therapy encourages movement and rhythm awareness and it can help children to develop better motor planning skills, socialization and group interaction skills and increased awareness of personal and surrounding spaces. Music therapy helps people with neurological, mental and behavioral disorders. Music improvisation, listening, song writing, lyric discussion, music and imagery and performance can all be part of therapy sessions.
Manual Therapy:
Manual therapy puts muscles into a state of relaxation before stretching them thereby allowing patients to achieve an increased range of movement. It treats both soft tissue and joint structures.
Vojta (Reflexlocaomotion) Therapy:
This special therapy is primarily enhances the motor development and it also has added benefits of improvements in cognition, fine motor, breathing and digestion.
