Vitamin D is a sunshine vitamin. It is a fat soluble vitamin and is not soluble in water. This vitamin is used to absorb calcium and phosphorous from the different parts of the body. This vitamin is also needed to keep the bones and teeth healthy as it absorbs calcium. It helps in passing of impulses to the brain. The easiest and most freely available source is the ultraviolet rays or the sun what we usually called. It also maintains the insulin level in the blood stream.

Foods that contain vitamin D

There are many foods where you get vitamin D. There are sources where you can get it from natural herbs. It can be got from animal products such as eggs, butter milk and others. Milk has less of vitamin D but milk products have lots of vitamin D. Some ready made or ready to eat products are forfeited with vitamin D. Fatty fishes like salmon and tuna fish are rich in vitamin D. One of the best sources is the cod liver oil and it is the richest in vitamin D. It is also got from liver and beef. It has been noticed that orange juice is fortified with vitamin D. In eggs vitamin D is mainly in the yolk. Very few foods naturally contain this vitamin. Swordfish contains vitamin D but in a relative amount. Breakfast cereals have this kind of vitamin in them. Pastries, bread, crackers, cereal grain bars and other foods may contain about 10% to15% of vitamin D in them. Puddings that are made of mix and forfeited vitamin D milk are also a good source.

Conclusion

Lack of this vitamin causes rickets in children and in adults. Extra doses of this cause toxicity. It also causes nausea, vomiting, muscle pain and other problems. Deficiencies may also cause if one does not get enough sunlight. To avoid the entire deficiencies one must keep a check on all the food intakes. One must be able to keep tact of all the wonderful foods that contain vitamin D. It is very important to know that which food contains how much of each vitamin so that they can choose accordingly.
