Vitamin can be easily synthesized within the skin under exposure of the ultra violet radiation of the sunrays in favorable conditions. This vitamin is contained in the milk of all the lactating animals including the humans. The concentration is most in cow's milk and contains up to 30-70 international units per quart. However the department of food and drug administration suggests normally the average requirement of an individual may be 200-400 international units and so emphasis has been laid on the supplementation of cow's milk with chemically synthesized vitamin D3 which itself is a compound of the vitamin D. Currently in the United States most of the milk that is sold for human consumption contains 400 international units of the chemically synthesized vitamin D3 added per quart and bears a notice on the milk carton label. Thus any form of milk, pasteurized, evaporated or condensed that is sold commercially in the US contains vitamin D3 of two origins, one made by the cow using sunlight to irradiate 7-dehydrocholesterol present in her skin and the other made by a chemical process and then added to the cow's milk as a nutritional supplement.

As the skin is able to able to manufacture vitamin D from the ultra violet radiations of the sunrays, most of the population that live near the equator will have no shortfall of the nutrient, as their bodies will be making from 10,000 to 20,000 international units of this vitamin each day. However with out burst of the population over the course of time has compelled many to move towards the higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere where up to half the year, solar-UV exposure isn't enough to fuel vitamin D synthesis within the skin. In this regard milk can act as a perfect option with appreciable content of the vitamin. This initiative can also give a boost to the diary industry that may prove fruitful in terms of the national economy. More over with a considerable increase in the complaints of sunburns and skin cancer people even in the higher latitudes are concerned about the sun exposure of the skin for natural production of the vitamin. Recent studies also indicated that it could be hazardous for the health. It is also found out that vitamin D derived from milk has got a wide range of advantages and benefits such as the nutrients effectiveness in fighting cancer and diabetes, usefulness for the treatment of mental depression and schizophrenia etc.
